PlayStation horror game classic Until Dawn is being remade for PS5 and PC using Unreal Engine 5, with the enhanced game set to be released sometime in 2024.

Update 01/02/24: Something not clear in the announcement trailer, but revealed in a PS Blog post is that this is actually a full remake of Until Dawn by Ballistic Moon. The studio is using Unreal Engine 5 for the remake, as opposed to the Decima engine of the original, and making a series of updates to the gameplay and narrative.

The new version of Until Dawn will now have a third person camera, instead of fixed camera angles, and is shifting the story to be “more nuanced and emotional” and expand on “unexplored emotional parts”, which feels like a step away from the original’s schlocky teen horror vibes. There will also be new locations, enhanced old ones and new interactions throughout.

They’re even redoing the soundtrack, replacing Jason Graves original score with a new soundtrack by Mark Korven.

The original story continues.

Originally released in 2015, Until Dawn really put Supermassive Games on the map as a horror game developer, and saw them then delve deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole of more and more narrative horror through The Dark Pictures Anthology series, The Quarry and more.

But everyone always calls back to their first hit, and with good reason.

In our original review of Until Dawn in 2015, Jim said, “With its immersive world, branching narrative, and lifelike character work, Until Dawn will have players on the edge of their seats while pounding them with jump scares and a bone-chilling soundtrack. Having previously worked on ports and smaller titles for Sony, Supermassive Games have shown that they can play with the big boys and we can’t wait to see what they come up with next.”

The only thing I wonder is, how will the bits where you have to hold the controller still when you’re playing on mouse & keyboard?
