Remasters of the original Star Wars: Battlefront games are coming to modern platforms, with Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection out for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC on 14th March 2024.

Aspyr is at it again with another remaster of some classic games, and this time it’s the original Star Wars: Battlefront games by Pandemic Studios.

With battles spanning the original and prequel trilogies, Star Wars Battlefront and its sequel borrowed the scale and scope of Battlefield series and married it to the iconic film series, with laser blasters, tanks and aerial combat in tow. The sequel then added in the ability to play as Jedi and Sith for some fan-pleasing lightsaber combat.

These are all-time cult classics with the first game originally coming out on PC, Xbox and PlayStation 2, during the infancy of console online gaming in 2004. Of course, there were vastly different technical capabilities between those three platforms at the time, and that showed up in player counts – PS2 could support just 16 players, while Xbox had 32 to PC’s 64. It’s the PC version that’s being used as the source for these remasters, which we can tell from the trailer touting full 64-player online multiplayer. There’s also split-screen local gameplay, and the Galactic Conquest single player mode – the first game has battles from the six films, while the sequel has you join Darth Vader’s 501st Legion of Stormtroopers.

There’s some nice bonuses here too, with Battlefront including the Jabba’s Palace bonus map, while Battlefront II has Bespin: Cloud City, Rhen Var: Harbor, Rhen Var: Citadel, and Yavin 4, and the bonus heroes Asajj Ventress & Kit Fisto for Arena mode.

Hero Assault mode has also been expanded to allow you to play on all ground maps, including Death Star, Kashyyyk, Kamino, and Naboo for the first time.

The one question I have is whether there’s cross-play, but I’m sure that will be answered in time.
