The Elder Scrolls Online Story Will Be Mostly Single Player

Matt Firor, the game designer for Bethesda’s much anticipated MMO based on their Elder Scrolls franchise, has been talking. He’s given an interview, using this new medium all the cool kids are talking about called “video”. It’s with GameStop’s monthly cover-art peddlers, Game Informer but here are the most interesting bits.

In the Elder Scrolls games you’re always the hero, whether you want to be or not, you go out there and you kill the dragons. You kill Mehrunes Dagon in Oblivion. In Morrowind, you’re up there fighting the Tribunal – those are huge, global, epic things that you don’t want to stand in line to do in an MMO. The last thing you want to do is have the final confrontation with Mehrunes Dagon as he’s stomping across the Imperial City, and you see like 15 guys behind you waiting to kill him because they’re on the same quest.

We have a whole part of the game that is 100 per cent solo, which is the main story, where the world focuses on you. You are the hero, everything you do is solo and the world reacts to you that way

The game will be played in the third person and will also feature 200-player PvP instances so it’s still very much deserved of that “MMO” tag. This news that the developers are fully aware of how important to the universe a solitary experience is can only be a good sign. It’s certainly taken my interest from “complete distrust” up to “okay, tell me more”. What about you?

Oh, by the way, can we all please agree to use “TESCO” as the acronym for this game? I think that’d be brilliant.

  1. In this case: whats the point?

    • monthly subscriptions for the bits that are MMO. Single player story for the people who think MMO mechanics are totally at crossed purposes to what Elder Scrolls games have always been about.

      But mostly, monthly subscriptions.

      • If they add regularly to the single player portion, and I don’t mean horse armour but full quest-lines and new areas (which aren’t rehashed), then I’d be tempted. If not, I don’t think this would be for me.

      • but will we be able to play the single player bits without paying the sub?

      • The problem is I flat out refuse to pay monthly subs on a game. If I’ve bought the game that’s it, I’ve bought it, not paying monthly unless the game is free in the first place.

      • Doubt it. I’d blast through it in a month or two, then return when a sizeable amount of new content has been released, just like I did with Skyrim. Traded it in after getting the plat, won’t rebuy until any full DLC is released.

      • Was in reply to Hazel, am in agreement with Tony.

  2. I’m glad the main story is solo, it means I’m more likely to play it.
There’s always two parts to MMOs anyway, the race up to the level cap then the end game.
Here I think the solo part should include some multiplayer but be balanced for solo then the endgame can be about all these heroes who’ve completed their journey and now are running round, teaming up and doing raids and the like.

  3. Basically it is like GW2 using instances for the main quests.

  4. Now i want this to come to ps3 even more. One can dream & that’s all it will probably be.

  5. Best of both worlds then? Sounds excellent to me! Is this multiplatform or PC only?

  6. Like Diablo 3? ewwwww, i gots Multiplayer in my Singleplayer…..

  7. I just don’t play my games in a way which suits monthly subscriptions. When I get a new game, I play it almost exclusively for 3 days max, and then it’s time for a few others, while still playing that, and then it just falls back in with the others.

I keep most of my games, unless they’re particularly poor, for well over a year minimum. No WAY could I justify paying a subscription for any game with my gaming habits.

  8. I will just read everything about it on the extensive wiki the players will create – story wise that is for all the new lore :)

  9. ok

  10. TESCO it is.
