Last year’s PES was much improved. I went so far as to tell people that “PES is back” meaning that it felt much like the glory days of the franchise. But FIFA continues to improve and build on its massive successes so it is important that Konami’s franchise didn’t relax in its mission to be the best football simulation available.
These six new gameplay videos show off some of the new features and hopefully give PES fans cause to get quite excited about the new season.

I must admit I have been a FIFA fan but PES 2011 is amazing. I played FIFA from it’s release until only a couple of months ago until I bought PES for £15. It is sensational, faster paced, less predictable, nicer shooting and passing, great graphics, and a Manchester United license :D Can’t wait until PES 2012

Me too, I’m a long term FIFA fan, even preferring FIFA when PES was obviously light years ahead with PES5.
I got a bit frustrated with the actual football in FIFA10, so decided to buy PES2011 & I just love it, still play it every single day even now, the footie just feels better and then when you add in the Master League too it’s just so deep. really looking forward to PES2012 although still play FIFA – It’s just not my main footie game anymore, because it’s more accessible it doesn’t take long until you’ve seen it all, whereas because PES takes a lot of tweaking & tactics it seems to take much longer to master.

Very disappointing, very dull and very lackluster. These are things that should already be within the game really and the quality of presentation for those videos is very poor indeed. :-(
cc_star
They are in the game, it’s just that it takes weeks or months of training to coach a player to go on the runs etc
You set skill points on player attributes and over time you can mould each play into the kind of player you want them to be, for specifics beyond general training & coaching you assign a skill and a length of time you want them to practice it like off the shoulder runs
The game is tactically very deep and that side of things is obviously a bit more inaccessible to the masses, presumably why they’re just coding it into the game as standard.
Yes, the presentation is poor, he tweeted an apology earlier saying its the first time he’s done this kind of thing and you have to say the devs back in Japan just aren’t good at marketing like the masters at EA
djhsecondnature
If they’re in the game, why are they classing it as an “improvment”? Makes that worse in my book.
The footage just looked very bland and, if it’s like 2011, just not that much fun.
I’m still hoping it really pull it out of the bag, but I’ve been wishing for that for years now.

What I meant to say, they’re in the game, just not accessible – everything takes time, coaching and tweaking. My wingers make overlapping runs all the time. It makes more sense to bring stuff to the front I just hope it doesn’t become as shallow as FIFA as a result. ie. choose your team & formation and that’s basically it, management & coaching doesn’t really make a difference & there’s no sense of growing as a team (other than the gamers ability getting better & used to the nuances of the game)
Personally (since last year anyway, might change this year) I prefer the deeper, tactical game of footie over the flash-bang fun of FIFA, in part because I play it for a whole year, but also lots of the FIFA play has become annoying since FIFA09’s highpoint
jcor
Are you serious? These are huge changes to the AI system that look like they’ll make a huge difference to the game.
Peco
But why are they only just highlighted now? Surely overlapping runs have been in PES games before?
e8
The best way to obeserve pes’ a.i. is in the new master league coach mode(a mass of strategic options,) which I play online, when mixing it up with actually playing. Always a joy, when I head off for cuppa, to come back & find i’m 1-0 or more up.
djhsecondnature
Yes I’m serious. Surely these have been in PES all along, and if they haven’t then that’s a damning indictment of how far PES has fallen.
jcor
I won’t deny PES this generation has been awful compared to the glory days of the PS2 era, but those sort of overlapping runs, especially the dummy runs and the diagonal runs have never even been in the last couple of FIFAs which have been miles better than PES.
metamorph
Instead of crying about what you had to go through in previous games, think about what they’re planning for the future. Overlapping runs were certainly not possible in online modes or friendlies or MLO, so this time you can actually use it in a way that’s useful and better. One of the must frustrating things in the previous game, online especially, was the defending and lack of overlapping runs, so this is definitely a massive change that wasn’t there previously.
There are other major changes as well which consist of the last year of the 2-year revamp which Konami’s core team worked in conjunction with Team Sky Blue, so the changes have come full circle now. I’ve always considered PES a more realistic and tactical game to FIFA’s ping-pong style of football, and from what I’ve read of other hands-on previews of the game at E3 and later previews, there are some excellent new tactical additions as well. This is where PES truly excels.
djhsecondnature
@metamorph – PES more tactical and realistic? You must be having a laugh. PES is, and always has been, arcade-style football. As for ping-pong football, the arrow passing in PES is far more consistent with a game of table tennis that FIFA I’m afraid.
As for “crying” over previous games, it’s more that for the past two years we’ve heard that PES is back, that it’s been revolutionised and revamped to be the best it’s ever been, which frankly, it hasn’t been. The best PES still remains a close tie between 5 and 6 and since then, it’s been a slippery slope downhill, with the exception of the minor improvement last year. I’ve heard it all before and until I see something that really makes me go “wow, PES is back”, I won’t believe it.
Peco
Why are they showing off these aspects as if they’re new and exciting?! Imagine if a modern football game DIDN’T include zonal marking or dummy runs! I keep hoping every year that they sort PES out but it’s just not happening for them. FIFA domination will continue for another year at least.
metamorph
Nonsense. Dummy runs and diagonal runs weren’t even in the last couple of FIFA games, so what exactly are you smoking? There’s also absolutely no tactical freedom in FIFA, and their style of ping-pong football sickens me.
Peco
No tactical freedom in FIFA? Look again.
e8
application not supported, damn. Will be picking this up day1, as i want top players cheap, on master league online(eg. ronaldo, started at 8mil, now 40mil.) Don’t knock pes, until you’ve tried mlo(new since pes11.) Will check videos later on my pc.
e8
If pes got fully licensed strips, I think alot of people would sing a different tune. Gameplay has always been superior, people are blinded by fifas’ visuals, but it’s purely cosmetic. Each new pes, more lovingly refined than the last & you can dload all prem strips on week of release, from the web. I still try both demos, every year before purchase, but last fifa I bought was 05, been buying pes since it was called iss pro.
djhsecondnature
I really dislike that argument. It’s not really about the kits, especially with how quickly you can get them for consoles and PC now, it’s that the game just isn’t as good.
e8
I’m sorry, but if it’s not the kits/visuals, to say say fifa has ever had better overall gameplay, is laughable imo.
Hoopiness
It’s laughable to say that PES gameplay has “always been superior”. It used to be the one to beat, then they really arsed it up for themselves. It was absolutely terrible for a couple of years. In that time, EA have capitalised beautifully.
That said, I do think the licenses have a big effect on things. If there’s not much between the gameplay (there has been though, FIFA has been streets ahead in recent years) then people will go with the licensed one. Why wouldn’t they?
e8
Well at least were both having a laugh:)
djhsecondnature
I’m pretty sure it’s widely accepted that FIFA is far superior to PES currently and has been for the past three years. You may find it laughable, but then your sense of humour greatly differs from most.
e8
One could say, your sense of non amusement arcade style, good in-depth gameplay, is dubious. Apart from yourself & one other, everyone here is choosing pes. This is an article re pes, aimed at pes fans is it not, or did I click the fifa one by accident. You obliviously dislike the franchise alot, which greatly narrows the reasons why you visited the article. I have a great sense, a sarcastic one, which is about as common, as it is in to like fifa.
e8
sense *of humour. Try a little humour yourself, instead of being so argumentative & serious. Like mhself, i’ve found your fanboyism quite humourus.
djhsecondnature
I’m curious as to how you obtained that just I and one other were in favour of FIFA currently, when it’s obvious that the favourism is far into the FIFA half.
As for “disliking” the franchise, if you’d have read my other comments I actually used to be a massive PES fan, it’s just fallen from grace recently and as a result, my love has waived.
As for claiming my “fanboyism”, I rarely hear such ridiculous comments so bravo.
Rocket_345
I get to buy both games due to both me and my brother being big football fans but it works out well evry year when he gets PES and i get FIFA. I think that i will allways buy FIFA though until PES gets full licenses but that isn’t going to happen. Also what is is with devs releasing multiple gameplay vids today. First there were 3 R3 vids and now 6 PES vids.
e8
Pes11, I dload all prem strips, one day after release. Every other league is catered by default.
beeje13
I’ve learnt in the last few years that you can’t tell if you like PES just from the demo, excpet with fifa its all bells and whistles straight away, so looks better.
I bought PES 2010 a few months after release and ended up doing several seasons of master league.
I still prefer FIFA though, but I wish there was the meaningful evolving of your team like CC_ star has said above, that sounds awesome (didn’t get around to getting PES2011).
e8
pes10 to 11, has been one of the biggest leaps so far, especially where online is concerned. I’ve only had lag twice on 11, whereas 10 was painful to the point where, I wouldn’t go near it.
Sab7786
will be buying this on release date for sure

Return to ps2 glory pes
dmcd09
I am buying this too…
Anyway imho the best football game for playability ever is Sensible World of Soccer 96-97 (yes i’m old skool…lol) and not far behind it is PES 6 on PS2.
I don’t doubt that the Fifa that was available in the PES 6 era sold more copies than Konami did with PES 6…but this just shows that a lot more people preferred a pick-up and play footie title back then and clearly still do now.
The reasons…firstly PES is and always has been a deep game…and not a very easy game to just pick up and play let alone master…FIFA is the complete opposite in my experience and bores the hell out of me.
Secondly…FIFA graphics have always been better…so good for them but Konami have stepped their game up in last two releases!
Thirdly…marketing…not sure that many FIFA fans could tell you who developed PES/marketed it but EA are opening up their own stores these days…a world of difference
Don’t get me wrong…I have tried to like the next-gen Fifa titles but they just feel floaty light too me whereas PES has always had a more solid and feel to it.
The masses will say that FIFA is far superior to PES these days and they may be right but that is solely down to Konami messing it up for themselves having served up some poor games with 2008, 2009 and 2010 on PS3 and EA improving but 2011 was a turning point and it seems that PES 2012 will be an even greater turn towards the right direction…and I can’t wait !
For those that have switched to FIFA in last couple of years, it would be interesting to know whether you think the current FIFA games play better than PES6 on PS2 !?!
