IT’S BACK AND IT’S NOT SHIT! IT’S NOT SHIT! IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTTTT’SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!
Anyway, Robot Wars returned after 12 years and it is decent! The camerawork is a bit shit at times and Dara is rather odd but he is decent. Going from over the top Craig Charles to a calm Dara O Briain is odd but the show is different and it works. It’s more serious instead of the 90s answer to The Thunderdome for Robots. Also, SPOILERS! Not that it’ll hide any but shuddup!
Do miss the battle music and how could they leave out the Robot Wars theme!? It feels odd without it! Destruction seems to be less but it’s there and the pit is kinda shit.
But it is excellent!
I didn’t expect the legendary Razer losing the first battle and that was only because of their victim dragging them into the pit with them. What was Nuts’s deal anyway? I mean, it seems to be flails. Basically, spikes and spinning. Against most robots, it doesn’t work and it didn’t. Carbride tore it to pieces and beat Behemoth thrice! Nuts was amusing to watch as both Behemoth and Carbride beat it up. Carbride seems to be Hypondisc on steroids and I can see them going far if they can get their death hum going. Am looking forward to episode 2. Shame there are only 6 episodes but hopefully, this is a warm up season to work out the kinks and we’ll get a fully fledged 12-20 episode season next year.25/07/16 at 17:33 #271524gazzagbModerator
Oh shit, I totally forgot about this. Will download it on iPlayer so I can watch it on the Tube tomorrow!28/07/16 at 11:53 #271693
it was by sheer dumb luck that i caught it on BBC2 on sunday. :O They didn’t really advertise it well. :-/
But it is back!28/07/16 at 17:28 #271710gazzagbModerator
I was pleasantly surprised by how well it was done. I wasn’t sure how it would fair with Dara O’Brien at the help (we all saw what happned with Chris Evans and Top Gear) but I really enjoyed it! It certainly brought back some memories!28/07/16 at 19:05 #271715
Yeah, I really enjoyed it and pretty much my thoughts mirror the above.
I feel they need to do a few more things with the arena, maybe more house bots, 8 way one off robot wars, maybe a bit of smoke when a robot falls into the pit ala old robot wars.
But yeah, loving it.28/07/16 at 19:42 #271722
Dara lacks the over the top presenter element but he knows his stuff and you can tell he is enjoying himself along with doing what he feels is the correct way. It seems more professional instead of the Thunderdome that we had back in the 90s. I can see him slowly relaxing and being closer to what he is like on Mock the Week as unlike Evans, he listens to criticism. Top Gear was a mess.
One or two house robots is a good change but they seem rather tame. 10 years ago? Sir Killalot wouldn’t have pushed a robot back. He would have attacked it. Shunt would have gotten in a lot of attacks but i think they are holding it back for when they want to really add in an “Oh crap!” factor. Can’t believe Razer lost. Granted, it may not be the legend it was due to advancements in tech but I think it could have gone far. Carbridge would have been an interesting fight and be the Hypodisc-Razer fight we never got(to the best of my knowledge.) The lack of battle music kinda feels odd and the cameras need to be fixed. The pit is wider and shorter. Should have reused the deeper, smoke producing one and the spikes seem just to be useless.
I did laugh when one of tiny bots got flung by Behemoth. Shame it got eliminated and it is interesting to have wear and tear be a major factor.
Nuts was a joke and just got lucky. If Razor hadn’t been taken down, it would have gotten eliminated.
Bit surprising that Razer’s history wasn’t really brought up but that could be down to them not wanting to risk overshadowing the reboot or confuse viewers.
It’s a solid effort and far better then Top Gear.28/07/16 at 20:06 #271726
Knuts was absolutely hilarious. Loved Behemoth whacking those small bots around the arena, and one of the showdowns between Carbide and Behemoth which was properly entertaining.
I genuinely think Razor could have been in with a chance of challenging Carbide. Problem was that Razor never showed it’s teeth, and people’s robots actually seem to be quite tough and competitive these days (not flimsy as some them were in old Robot Wars).28/07/16 at 22:38 #271733
If too long worded bot that i can’t remember was built 10 years ago, Razor would have pierced it without issue. It would be interesting to see how Razor(i believe this is Razor without being upddated by the team and i think, they said it was due to time issues that they didn’t build a new bot) would cope with tougher armour. Nuts was a joke yet it was amazing and a good show of sportsmanship that not only did they get it back from being trashed, they were helped as well. It was always the case on the original(I read an article on BBC, read it. It’s quite interesting) and showing the help was a good idea. :)
I think, Razor would just attack from the rear and Carbide(knew it was that or bridge) would be very dangerous for them. It would be a case of time, aggression and preventing that death hum.
If Tornado(and i think they are back), appear, i hope they have banned anti-pit devices. It was caused quite a ruffle back in the day and i do agree that it was very unfair but it was the show’s fault for allowing it. That said,I could see Sir Killalot deciding to interfer if it happens.
I can see Razer retiring if the team can afford to build a successor. Series 2 of New Wars will happen. I mean, if Top Gear can avoid cancellation, Robot Wars is certainly going to get a full series. I could see Craig Charles being invited back for series 2 if Dara’s reception continues to be badly recieved.
But if they force Chris Evans into it, it will die. Sadly, i could see them throwing the ginger twat in if Dara quits. Which, he could do due to other projects. Hopefully, he won’t. Shame Mock the Week has ended as i could see it being used to help promote it.28/07/16 at 22:50 #271734
Oh and Razer is one of the few bots to ever take on the house robots and live.08/08/16 at 12:48 #272272
3 episodes in, I have say, Robot Wars is AWESOME!
The last two episodes in particular have been fantastic, especially yesterday’s with TR2 storming most of the matches and some really good head-to-head matches.
