I’ve accidentally gone and spent 8 hours on The Division beta and the damn thing is still drawing me in. I didn’t like some of the changes they made at first like higher level AI, but now that I’m well equipped and the initial wave of douche bags (who don’t know what’s going o around themselves and walk in the way of my gunfire) have gone, the changes are welcome. Definitely a bit more going on in the DZ with the landmarks and loot boxes getting better respawn times, and I’m nearly up to the level of guns and armor that I was in the closed beta.
It’s best not to ask me the logic of committing so much time into these temporary snippets of game… I don’t quite know myself.
Yeah its a solid bit of kit, but Sony killed it well and truly. I played all the games I wanted to, and then unfortunately had to sell it due to lack of nee content :(
Hold Square in the extraction area, that’ll shoot off a flare, but the wait will be 90 seconds for a chopper to turn up, and then there’s a 30 second window to attach the loot.
Talking about avoiding enemies, you can do fast travel via the map. When I exited the DZ I just fast traveled to the base (or the social hub where the beta starts), and that saved half a journey. Unfortunately it didn’t allow fast travel to the DZ entry points, so I still had quite a walk. Also it’s annoying how the ‘stash’ is back at base. I didn’t quite like extracting tons of items, only to find I couldn’t continue because the stash was full and I needed a long journey back to base to empty the stash. I found it interrupted my DZ shenanigans a bit.
Ah, my bad. No if you only have one bit of loot then you’ll only drop that one bit of loot. If you have 6 loot, then that’s where three will be dropped publicly, and three privately. Likewise if you have say, 4 loot, you’ll drop something like 2 publicly and 2 privately.
The dummy extraction was me just calling in one extraction I have no intention of using, and then running off to another completely different extraction site, calling that in, and extracting my stuff there. It worked once or twice because the dick gang immediately ran to the first (dummy) extraction only to find no one there (probably), and that gave me some breathing space for when I was doing the real extraction at a different location. It’s a decent enough diversion tactic.
Dark Zone loot always needs to be extracted, but once it is extracted you can use it anywhere (normal or dark zone). Exiting the DZ with loot will mean the loot gets destroyed.
When you get killed you only lose your loot and some DZ money/experience. In fact three items of loot will become public meaning they can be stolen, and the other three will remain private so only you can pick them up again.
The DZ vendors generally offer better gear than the normal zone vendors, but the catch is that they cost DZ currency. If you do buy something from them, it’s free for you to equip and use whenever you want (no need to extract anything). For me the best weapons and gear came from DZ loot, but there were one or two useful bits of armor and mods from the DZ vendor.
It was definitely interesting stuff trying to extract high level gear that I could not afford to lose. I remember I tried to extract a Police M4 and nearly got killed. After that I started carrying a shotgun lol, and I started setting up a dummy extraction to throw hunting parties off, and then extract at a different location.
Ha yeah, same here @TSBonyman. It didn’t quite sink in that it would be that difficult and then I tried it and thought WTF. Got to the ice section, but that’s about it (unless I really wanted to smash my controller up in a fit of frustration lol).
I thought it would just be a straight up platforming challenge. Nope, not one bit.
Yeah the game looks fantastic, so much so I found myself recording a awful lot of the strolls I took between objectives, and there were some truly stunning sights. Fog, haze, snow, beaming sunlight, neon signs, the soft glow of Christmas lights and the clutter of abandoned homes. It easily scores 10/10 on environment design.
Thankfully I only did the main mission and a bit of dark zone in the alpha, so I’ve spent a lot of my beta time picking of the side quests and encounters. Tried out matchmaking which was decent enough (that alone means it bests the rather alienating Destiny), and there were some interesting moments in the dark zone. It takes a good 8 hours to try and complete everything the beta has to offer. Be interesting to hear people’s thoughts on it.
Just been playing it, and it has the same in-game content and restrictions as the alpha. Just the one main mission and the dark zone, with a handful of abilities (no perks or talents available to customise/use). I suppose it gives me a chance to try out the dark zone more, but I was hoping they’d do a different mission with at least a couple of perks/talents available. It’s still great for the playing it for the first time, and the weapon modding is featured which allows some nifty weapons to be equipped.
There have been some significant improvements too. The visuals have been added to and polished, the map and map key make a whole lot more sense, there was a bit more going on in the district with encounters and stuff, and the gameplay has had a good re-balance. Will try the Dark Zone out later on, and hopefully invest a bit more time in it.
If it is the same content as the alpha, then it’s basically one main mission and the darkzone.
That’s the impression I got. I watched an official Xbox video on how to play the beta and it was exactly the same thing I did previously. Whether there is more available i can’t tell, which is why I’ll give it a try later on and report back, but I have the feeling the same kind of stuff will be locked out.
Just been looking at some promotional material for the beta and it seems as though it’s going over the same mission and gameplay as the alpha which was a little disappointing. It may have a little extra content so I’ll give it a try, but I was expecting to try some perks and abilities out, as well as one of the higher level sectors of New York, just for some variety and to make sure I defo want the game.28/01/16 at 00:24 in reply to: Shameless self promotion… your PS4 and XBox One shared videos #260424
Final Gears of War Killstreak video (sold the game), and a few good’uns from Battlefield 4.
FYI I got a beta key today (via waitlist) and the download weighs in at 25.8GB. Pre-load is available so that should limit the download getting in the way of valuable beta time.
To add to that:
XCOM Enemy Unknown (upcoming release I think)
Soul Sacrifice (absolutely awesome)

For a moment I thought I was in Rocket League…
