The problem with playing offline is…you’ll never progress. Your challenges, unlocks and progression only happen when you are online and connected to the server. Your offline saves never convert/ get uploaded once you eventually go online. They are completely separate. So yes, it’s possible to play offline and not suffer a lost connection…but you won’t unlock anything.
I’m really loving the fighter squadron mode the more I play it. Your choice of vehicles is limited but it’s so much fun. I rarely get the chance to play as the falcon or slave 1 but when you do…oh its sweet. I love the first person view in slave 1!!
The game might be lacking content overall but what is there is so good!!!
I picked up my pre-order from GAME yesterday and played a good few hours too. Collected my thoughts on the game below. Some slight gameplay spoilers if you’re concerned about that.
First off, I’m a huge Star Wars fan so I was always going to be biased towards the game. It looks fantastic, it sounds fantastic, I also enjoy the gameplay more than any other online FPS I’ve played recently. I think the arcade feel to it was the best route to take (if you compare it to battlefield and COD). As there is no other FPS i’ll be playing online I have no concerns about buying the season pass to get more content.
I mainly played Walker Assault and Supremacy but dabbled in a few other game modes too – all quite enjoyable when your team actually plays correctly (more on that shortly).
The maps are enjoyable but I find the design of some a little odd. I’ve got nothing bad to say about Hoth and the Jundland Wastes on Tatooine. Brilliant maps. Love them. Sullust is so open its easy to get cut down in seconds especially by the turbo laser if anyone is sitting in there – I dont believe they are over-powered as many are saying online…I mean, you need them to shoot down ships so shooting a solider is obviously going to do serious damage!
Endor…urgh, I love the design of the map BUT gameplay wise: there is only one AT-AT in this map so the empire is at a disadvantage from the start (intentional maybe?), AT-ST’s get stuck on the terrain so its easier to stay in the valley with them and get torn apart quickly! The speeder bikes also seem quite pointless as only sections of the map are available at any one time during the Walker Assault mode. Perhaps they are better in the supremacy mode?
So the only really infuriating thing I’ve noticed so far is that people in the smaller matches don’t play for the objectives. They just sit in a corner and shoot people if they run past. Countless times yesterday the opposing team kept winning within 5 minutes as nobody on my team did anything to stop them. eg – our cargo is being stolen. shall we chase him? nah, lets just stay here and wait for the next guy. I think the smaller modes are better with a group you know.
I’m looking forward to more maps for Walker Assault and supremacy already. The 4 map cycle goes past so quickly. Bring on the battle of Jakku!!
As for the film, can’t wait. Got my midnight showing booked!!
I reached the “truth” mission last night. Mission 46 I think? Anyway, after seeing it for myself and listening to the associated audio tapes its not bothering me that much. It does wrap a couple of things up. It’s ‘Quiet’s Exit’ that still stings!
Now I’ve reached this point myself I’m wondering what more could have been in this supposed chapter 3. The level involving Eli that’s been shown on youtube is an obvious one but other than that i’m not sure? Perhaps we would have seen events closer to Metal Gear 1 and building of Outer Heaven? so far, venom snake seems like a decent chap…so a maniac who needs putting down.
Well after a couple more games this weekend im seriously tempted to be a day one buyer. It was nice to play something other than open world RPGs. As long as people stick to the objectives on Hoth and don’t treat it like a team deathmatch then it becomes a lot more enjoyable. I’ve won several games as the Rebels now – so it can be done!
I’m looking forward to seeing what other maps are available. Cloud City better be in there!!
I’ve not found any decent articles to be honest. Just read forum posts from players on multiple sites such as eurogamer, IGN, reddit etc.
I am looking forward to a decent article about the whole chapter 2 shambles/ missing chapter 3 shenanigans. Perhaps TSA could do one!?
I didn’t bother with the FOB part of the game. I just said no to the T&C’s to keep me offline. I prefer to have no interruptions.
I’m loving the internets reaction to this apparent chapter 3. Many think (hope) its all a ruse and that Kojima never left Konami so will be back to finish what he started. Sounds nice…but I doubt that is going to happen. If we do get the final chapters of the game they certainly won’t be free!
Well, I’ve slept on it. Quiet’s departure brought a tear to my eye, that can’t be denied. My first reaction was “why couldn’t this happen at the end of the game!!?” but then…it wouldn’t have the same effect would it? By removing her just before the end it stings that bit more. Is her absence our own “phantom pain” perhaps??
We still know very little about her though which isn’t like Kojima to leave so many details out of a character in his games. I made the assumption that she was one of Code Talkers people who was recruited by XOF due to being able to speak the same language. Thoughts? The fact she didn’t speak made me want to know more about her – he’s a bloody tease that Kojima! I guess it’s up to each of us to decide what happens to her afterwards too? I surely can’t involve any more human interaction…so that’ll be one lonely walk into the desert.
I can’t say anymore…i’m welling up!!! :)
I haven’t finished the game completely yet but i’m aware of the ending. After slogging through this game so far my response to that revelation was just “uh”. Chapter 1 flowed well and chapter 2 is currently a mess. I don’t consider replaying the same missions again on a higher difficulty to be a ‘new’ mission. So completing them is becoming a chore.
I have just done the main mission involving quiet and she is now gone for good. I’m furious! Not only was she the best buddy (for my play style) but I spent shit loads of GMP to buy her new equipment that didn’t even get used because it only unlocked just before this mission. My buddy list is down by one with more main missions still to go and in the end we still know very little about her. Pointless. Some people online are calling this ‘bittersweet’ – too bitter for my taste. I want my buddy back!!!
Gameplay wise, brilliant. Best one in the series. Everything else – rubbish.
I noticed that chapter 1 of MGS5 has a lot of main missions that are no different to the side missions! Like they were just fleshing it out with filler. Hoping Chapter 2 gets right to it.
@Pitcher – the first expansion for Witcher is £7.99 and the second currently has no euro/UK price I don’t think. Apparently you’ll save money overall by getting the £20 season pass..so i’m guessing you’re right with about £15…maybe more.
Ah, I nice easy thread to ease me back into the comments section. :)
I’m currently playing MGS5. I’ve just reached chapter 2 after what feels like an age. Enjoying the gameplay very much but the story progression feels a little odd. I’m so used to lengthy cutscenes and a fairly chatty Snake to getting very little of either!
I’m hoping to have the game finished before the Witcher 3’s first expansion in a few weeks time.
