Partnering with Russian developer Biart Studio LLC, 505 Games will publish Deep Black for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Claiming to be a world’s first (we’re skeptical), players will be able to enjoy the thrills of a third person action shooter in an underwater setting. So, like BioShock but with a couple of more dimensions. The game is set for a Q1 2011 release and promises “action-packed battles with an immersive story line, of complex science-fiction mystery, espionage and bio-terror.” So, like Hydrophobia then.
Our Russian comrades will also deliver “realistic physics in an underwater environment bringing new “depths” to in-game challenges.” We see what you did there.
Here’s some more blurb from the release:
Players will take to the murky depths armed with a wrath of underwater equipment from specialized underwater jet-packs with integrated harpoons, mini submersibles and other high tech equipment in pursuit of enemies. With the majority of the game play taking place below the water’s surface, action-adventure fans will need to master new skills to fight hostile enemies and infiltrate enemy bases.
How about a couple of screens that might spark some interest?

This reminds me somewhat of the underwater section of Dino Crisis 2. So yeah a world’s first eh. Which world is that exactly?

Also, is anyone else with me in thinking that thing in the 2nd screen looks chillingly like a MGS4 Gekko? Original indeed!

i can imagine the controls will be quite annoying. dont know why, i just feel it.

I thought this sounded very much like Dark Void, 3 dimensional sci-fi jet-packy fun. Except that one wasn’t much fun, finger’s crossed for this one though!

Aren’t 505 games famously a bit ….. well shit, for want of a better word ! :D

I’m intrigued, I’d love them to get this right. Though I know nothing of 505 games.
Descent on PC controlled fine way back when and had similar freedom of movement.
Maybe as the underwater action is the focus for the game rather than a diversionary “variety” level they’ll put the neccessary time and effort into getting the controls right.
Or maybe I’m thinking wishfully.

Not the first…Scuba Dive on the Speccy springs to mind.

That game was awesome, many an hour was spent on it. It’s the whole reason I’ve wanted someone to get a decent undrwater game on the new consoles. That cheesy-ass wii offering doesn’t bloody count.

I remember having a PC demo of something by Bullfrog not long after magic carpet came out – as it used the same engine. Dunno what it was called or if it ever saw a release.
