Uncharted Movie Delayed?

Those of you who spent the duration of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune thinking “You know, this would be much better if I didn’t actually have to do anything” may have been looking forward to a movie adaptation. Sony have been furiously beavering away trying to get one hammered out in time for a Summer 2011 release.

According to the LA Times, David O. Russell – who was being lined up to direct – has pulled out. Russell’s stand-out achievements to date have included direction and writing on Three Kings and I Heart Huckabees. Apparently the production team (which includes Charles Roven, one of the “Dark Knight” producers) and the studio had been trying to get Russell on board but all parties have failed to reach terms.

This leaves the future of the movie, although not cancelled – only delayed, in some uncertainty. Sony are believed to be looking for a new director but might look into casting a couple of the roles first. No doubt the internet will fire up the same old rumours of Joss Whedon in the director’s chair and perhaps even a chance for Nolan North to step out of the VO booth and get his face a job.

Personally, I don’t think you could go far wrong with David Boreanaz or perhaps a less-known quantity like Scott Foley for the role of Nathan Drake. Full on A-listers might be tricky to sign if Sony are keen on pushing production through as quickly as possible so mining some of the eminently capable talent from recent TV hits might not be a bad idea. It’s tricky though, since essentially you’re looking for someone to play a young Harrison Ford.

As for Elena? It would be nice to see Yvonne Strahovski or Radha Mitchell considered. Hayden Panettiere might also be a good call if she can shake her “teen” image.

The real genius in casting, though, might just be who they get for the role of Sully. Much of the game’s comedy and depth came via the interplay between Nate and Sully so whoever lands that role might just steal the show.

  1. Personally, Nathan Fillion would be an ideal Nathan Drake. His looks aren’t far off, and his accent is pretty adaptable, I’ve found. The only downside is that he’s nearly 40 (then again, Jackman’s 41…), and would need to train a whole lot for the role.

Good call with Yvonne Stra’hot’ski. She would make a cracking Elena..

But really, the original voice actors would be able to do the job possibly better than anyone new. Nolan North looks fairly close to Drake (though he’d need to train for it). Whilst Emily Rose actually looks almost identical to her character.

Only problem for the sequel would be that Claudia Black doesn’t look Chloe enough. Maybe a hair dyed Strahovski would fit that perfectly, what with her being an Aussie and all…

    • Apart from Avatar (where Cameron’s reputation and 3D hype ‘sold’ the movie) I can’t ever think of relative unknowns holding the lead roles of a movie which will surely cost $200m+

      • Well that’s true, but it’s not outside the realms of possibility.
North has already said he’s not comfortable with doing it himself, but that’s the lead actor part, so that’s understandable, considering that he’s much more of a voice actor. Just please, anyone but Jackman, he’s soo not the right actor for this role…

But Emily Rose to play Elena just make sense. She’s got the voice, face, physique of the character, and knows the part well… She’s the perfect fit.

      • Agreed, she’s absolutely perfect for Elena. However it’s also true that it’s unlikely the execs will want ‘some random’ playing the part. They’ll want to put a half-decent name to her, rather than someone who can actually play the part well. Kristen Bell could possibly play Elena, she wouldn’t be too bad I don’t think.

  2. I love Strahovski, but she’s far too serious to play Elena I think. On the other end of the scale, Panetierre is way too young to play Elena. She comes off as whiny and arrogant when she tries play ‘experienced’. Never heard of or seen Rhada Mitchell.

And I can’t think of anyone to play Drake. Nolan north is a bit too old but due to his voice, no one would be able to fill the role properly. The man is the literal voice of current-gen gaming.

  3. It would be better if it wasn’t live action, they should just get naughty dog to do it…

  4. Much as it pains me to say it because I love the games, any film will be bloody awful – same as every film of a game always has been.

  5. I need to see this film even the misses who does not like games so much wants to see this one uncharted is brilliant
