PSP2, the rumour that refuses to die just got a whole lot more real. Apparently (according to Kotaku) Sony showed off the new, as yet unannounced console at around the time of the Tokyo Game Show at a private meeting in Japan.
The skinny? The PSP2 does have a rear touch panel (it’s a “big mousepad”), the screen’s an inch larger than the current PSP (and “sharper”, Sony’s calling it “HD”) and, at the moment, Sony are struggling balancing power, battery life and heat.
Literally, it’s “overheating”.
According to the report, Sony has already set in stone the PSP2’s goals and direction, but is still messing around with the innards and the technical specification. And, as you might have gathered from the recent price cuts for the PSPgo, the next generation console is currently aiming for “Autumn 2011”.
That rear trackpad sounds fantastic, though, although it’s baffling why the main screen wouldn’t offer the same sort of tactile flexibility. We’ll see when Sony finally start talking about it…

If the back is “like a trackpad”, then what format are we going to use?
(1) Download only? Given the “success” of the Go, I can’t imagine that
(2) UMD? UMD2? BluMD? Where would you put them? Putting teck onto a flip-open door? Surely not. Perhaps some sort of BluMD slot?
(3) Memory stick / card / cartridge? Surely that’s a step backward given the PlayStation family history of being disc-based consoles.
It’ll be fun finding out though.
And I like the term BluMD. I might have to copyright that, quick.

“tech.” I meant “tech.” (sigh)

I really don’t see how a tactile screen on the rear of the console would offer up an sort of adavantage. Wouldn’t it be hard to get to confortably, unless it would only be used for certain games. :/

Maybe you have your fingers… IN THE GAME! :O

mmnnn. interesting idea.
I am imagining some sort of side grip, with touchscreen on each rear side. Some sort of steering wheel like grip, would work nicely with your hands wrapping around the grip touching the two rear touchscreens.
I’d say the rear screens would have to be high up on the rear. It would be uncomfortable being centred or lower. You wouldn’t have a natural hand position.
I’m intrigued. It will surely be in 3D, and definitely with better graphics, and new controls and a new look to match. Can’t wait. I will be buying this for sure.

scrap that.
It will look like an iPad, but with touchscreen on the back not front, resulting in no smudges, and no glasses stereoscopic 3D and full HD for previous games, and movies.
Simple.

Really looking forward to seeing the PSP2. I must admit though, I love my PSP Slim, so they would just take up residence together at my pad….
