Game Informer’s December edition got a few tongues wagging over on NeoGAF yesterday, with the general consensus that the US magazine will exclusively reveal a new Tomb Raider game in their January publication. The image (you can see the full pic here) shows a vessel shipwrecked resulting in speculation that previously leaked details regarding Lara Croft’s next adventure matches the context of the graphic.
From the old Shacknews story (which references a now removed fact sheet once hosted on site Fourplayercoop):
When a sudden storm destroys her research vessel, a young and inexperienced Lara Croft finds herself stranded on a mysterious and remote island hidden off the shores of Japan. Despite several signs of various inhabitants the island is oddly deserted, and an uneasy feeling settles in as strange sounds emerge from the shadows. With only her determination, inner strength and resourcefulness to help her, Lara must overcome the challenges of a harsh and unforgiving journey that will take her across a vast island wilderness and deep into the claustrophobic and menacing underground tombs from the island’s past.
The internal document also reveals that the new Tomb Raider would be a “reboot” that “[explores] the origin of Lara Croft’s transformation into a hardened adventurer as you unravel the story behind the island’s mysterious past,” lending more credence that a rebirth of the character, alluded to in the tagline “A Survivor Is Born” in the image, is Tomb Raider related.

Sounds interesting with the open world environment and no one way to traverse obstacles.

Looks more like an Uncharted to me.

Isn’t Tomb Raider and Uncharted similar enough?

i like the sound of the open world aspect, but the most important thing is how will it play?
don’t turn it into a shooting game with the odd bit of puzzling platform gameplay, keep it as a platform puzzle game with the odd bit of shooting.
i’ve always found the shooting to be the least interesting parts of pretty much all the tomb raider games.

There’s been much a do about this on TR forums recently, while the majority of the fans want more puzzle and exploration based gameplay there are others, introduced when Legend was released that want more, but if the rumours of an open world are right, we won’t have to worry, because both can be evenly balanced.

alas.. the true fun in those games was its simplicity… now that thats gone…. not the same :/ imagine if they were to make a game with ps1 ability’s only? it’d be wicked…

After the lastest Lara Croft outing (the PSN game) I am very excited to see what they do with this.
