Custom Firmware Breaks PS3?

Earlier on it was reported that hackers had released the first custom PS3 firmware.

Tools from ‘KaKaRoTo’ allowed users to create their own firmware using Linux and some coding knowledge, but it didn’t appear to be that useful, with KaKaRoTo saying “this custom firmware is really meant for future homebrew installation”, and “will not allow piracy.”

The custom firmware does seem to have a side effect or two, though, with a post over on NeoGAF claiming that the user’s Trophies have gone and would not reappear, the save data has gone, along with the data utilities – “Pretty much everything under the ‘Game’ category”.

Ouch.

  1. According to ps3-hacks.com, that’s already been fixed in an update to the hack. One can only hope that it bricks the consoles next time :)

  2. They fixed it already. That was quick.

  3. There is no way to stop the coming of CFW’s, but hackers still have much to learn about the PS3 architecture. It’s not only about breaking the security. ;)

  4. Must have been the one they used for pretend gaming then ;-)

  5. This is not unexpected, people making early firmware are fully prepared to lose all this kinda stuff. All these ‘aha got what they deserved’ comments are missing the point

  6. lol, kinda serves him right. :)

  7. I don’t think the guy experimenting with this cares a lot about trophies or savegames, and like it’s been said, I seriously doubt that he uses the same console for both experimenting AND gaming. Especially this early on.

Not that it matters any more, apparently…

  8. How gutted would you be. On the other hand, anyone stupid enough to try it without a backup or on their main machine deserves it, or anyone in general who is going to use it for piracy really.

  9. The bug now appears to be fixed, of course its now only a (short) matter of time before CFW is released that does allow piracy.

The PS3 is now the least secure system… The CFW will probably soon be able to spoof games that need later FW to play like GT5 etc and maybe even connect to the PSN

    • ok, I’ve just read this and I’m all sad now :(
