Bobby Kotick On PS Vita: “Where Is The Market?”

Activision’s outspoken head Bobby Kotick has commented on PS Vita, via an interesting interview in The Guardian.

“There will always be a need for specialised hardware to satisfy the needs of gamers,” he says.  Referring to Vita specifically, he calls it a “fantastic piece of hardware.”

“Technically, we’re super excited about what we can do on it, it’s really something incredible. The question is,” he asks, “where is the market?”

“I think the pricing was surprisingly affordable, the product itself is really great – so the questions is, is there a need in the marketplace for a very specialised portable device of that capability?”

It’s an interesting question, but at such a low price point and with some killer games lined up for launch (Uncharted, WipEout, LBP) there’s hopefully huge demand.

“Hopefully there will be,” he continues, “because it’s a really nice product and its very well differentiated from what you can get in even the most capable smartphone or tablet today.”

  1. If they could get cross-play (or whatever they’re calling it) where you could play a CoD game on the Vita against PS3 players, then they’d be on the a goldmine.

It probably wouldn’t be too difficult as they’re going to have it working for Wipeout 2048.

  2. I’m still not sure where the market is outside the committed core

I don’t think anyone played a PSP game and thought “I wish it had more power”
The new control mechanisms will open the door to more gameplay types, but they’ll have to do better than those at E3, because outside MNR it looked gimmicky & tacked on.

Still, MOAR POWER is Sony’s way and they’ve not done to bad out of it over the past 15 years.

    • That’s like saying I bet no one used the iPAD 1 and thought “I wish it had more power”. I certainly didn’t, but look at iPAD 2 – MOAR POWER (and a couple of cameras) and it has sold like hotcakes, 1 million iPAD 2s in the first weekend vs 1 million iPAD 1s in the first 28 days.

Vita won’t sell to the non-gamers particularly well, but don’t underestimate the size of the core gamer market, it’s more than enough to give Vita a cracking start and enough momentum to get the continued support of devs down the line. The problem with PSP was the thing being hacked and devs losing interest in supporting it. Despite that, it has done pretty well all told and I’m sure a great many of the 70 million PSP owners will be looking at the Vita with keen interest.

  3. Meh…CoD is washed out. I want to see if titles like Skate, Prince of Persia, AC, and SIMS (just to name a few) would make it on the PSV.

    • I think The Sims would work great on PSV, sort of like MNR does. Be super snappy with all that touch functionality, and skate would be cool where you actually swipe to do tricks and maybe roll your finger across the back touch pad to move…i may be going a bit far now. Anything’s better than another CoD though right?

  4. This isn’t the first time when Bobby the Superbright cant see the light in the tunnel. He is as limited and narrowminded as possible

  5. Even though I’m not a huge fan of cod and I’d far rather play battlefield or killzone on console. I can’t think of anything I’d rather play on then cod on the vita. Bobby kotick must of brainwashed me…

  6. I have never, in all my years of gaming, desperately wanted a handheld console on day one. Thanks to Uncharted, Everybody’s Golf and Wipeout, the Vita is the first handheld i’m literally lusting after.

Remember when Sony told us to get a better paying job or work extra shifts, to be able to afford a PS3? Well i’ll be doing whatever i have to, to get the cash for a day one purchase. That includes selling my internal organs, scrubbing Susan Boyles toilet or giving rimjobs to sailors.

    • asl? haha, i couldn’t resist :P

Back on topic and I wonder how much a 3g subscription will cost each month. Or will there be some way to get online via your ps3.
