Wii U Might Skip On A Unified Network

Apparently Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime thinks that a single, unified network infrastructure isn’t necessarily a good idea, and instead suggests that they’ll “welcome” publisher platforms.

In an interview with Forbes, Nintendo of America’s President speaks out publisher specific networks.  “We’ve seen what our competitors have done,” said Fils-Aime, “and we’ve acknowledged that we need to do more online, starting with the launch of our eShop on Nintendo 3DS, and we’re going to continue to build our online capability.”

Let’s be honest here, saying the eShop is off to a slow start is an understatement.  But – and this is a surprise – the single sign in and clever SpotPass system just works.  It’s simple, and slick.

“For Wii U, we’re going to take that one step further,” he said, “and what we’re doing is creating a much more flexible system that will allow the best approaches by independent publishers to come to bear.”

“So instead of a situation where a publisher has their own network and wants that to be the predominant platform, and having arguments with platform holders, we’re going to welcome that.”

If this sounds like they’re planning seperate network solutions from the likes of EA and Activision, then – yes – that’s what we reckon too.  If this means seperate sign ins, seperate accounts, seperate friend lists and so on, count me out.

  1. *bang* That’s the sound of Nintendo shooting themselves in the foot for the umpteenth time.

  2. I don’t know what I think of this… its strange.

  3. I suppose no central Nintendo service means no unified friends list so people would have a different friends list depending which publisher’s server they were connected to or possibly even depending on which game they were playing.
Maybe most Wii U adopterrs won’t mind much as long as they can play online via whatever service is provided by the publishers.

  4. they really are cheap there using a bluray drive but do not want to pay licensing costs so no movies now they do not want a online system that is there own.

  5. Oooooo, its gonna fall flat at this rate, but im open minded. Playstation ftw.

    • SEGA FTW… oh no, wait, I’m in the wrong decade :p

  6. Next news from Nintendo – the WiiU controller isnt wireless and also requires mains power, the Wii U is not compatible with HD TVs and the disks arent disks theyre cassettes….

  7. Excuse my ignorance, but my opinion of Wii players was that very few of them use online, and I would be surprised to see that change much with the new Wii.

The majority of people on this site are hardcore gamers, and therefor realise this is a bad move from ninty, but I would be a lot of money that my 8 year old doesn’t give a crap :P

    • yea same with PS2 players before but look at the PS3 now plus look at the thousands of videos about XBL kids on yt I’m pretty sure if your 8 year old has the chance he would love it

      • very fair point. From that angle you are right, but then also remember that the PS2 was out when internet was slow, and not common place. The wii was out after the internet “boom”. No way of proving either of our opinions I guess, but wait and see.

Also, in my last post, I missed the word “niece” in the sentence “my 8 year old doesn’t give a crap”. I would cry if I had a kid haha/

  8. Nintendo look at MGO… nuff said
