In a recent interview, president of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has stated that cross-game chat will never make its way to the PlayStation 3. According to Yoshida the console’s RAM is consumed almost entirely by running software, without a sufficient remainder to power cross-game sessions, an online function PS3 owners have been asking for since the emergence of Xbox Live Party.
Once a game gets RAM we never give it back, it’s not possible to retrofit something like that after the fact…Â The game has to use its own memory to do [in-game voice chat]. There’s always voice chat in the game. But it’s a part of a game feature. It’s not a part of an OS feature. That’s the reason in terms of the ability to have voice chat across different games.
PlayStation Vita on the other hand will support cross-game chat, carrying a hefty RAM of 516MB, doubling that of its home console counterpart.

if sony are smart about this they may target a vita at these users, if you think about it they said its possible to use vita as a controller for the ps3, well this controller has RAM in it, and a pre-built party chat mode.
they could work it where the vita is the pad and all party features are on the screen, simply tap the psn member for mute etc etc, is it ideal no, and over £200 quid for party chat is a little extreme, but with everything thats coming for vita IMO its smart marketing stratergy to target a tie in feature for the ps3 even if its not a controler simply have the vita next to you.

For how many years have PS3 gamer’s requested cross game chat? It’s pretty poor for it to take this amount of time for Sony to just say, “it’s not possible”.
Disappointed tbh, it was the feature I wanted most. Screw auto-downloads, cloud saves etc, I just wanted to be able to talk to my mates on the PS3 no matter what game they were playing.

PS3 has 256 and 256 different ram things…
256 for vido and 256 for something else.

this is why when sony launch their next console, they need to have stuff like this sorted before launch.
like cross game chat, cross game invites, universal custom soundtracks, and other features a connected console might need to be available even during a game.
so they have an area of the memory set aside beforehand that’s reserved, and so that all titles support those features.
or rather so titles don’t have to support it, the os will do it all.

Well, we knew it wasn’t coming, but it’s nice for it to actually be confirmed.
What annoys me, though, is that they could’ve just came out and said this years ago instead of saying “we’re working on it”. PS4.
Reality Check
The only reason people mention Cross game chat is to try & find fault with the PS3(like from the day it came out. So i.e the haters)
I would rather have PS2 playback back really(dam that is the 1 billion time i have said that) LoL

YES. I often thought that if the 360 didn’t have cross game chat, nobody with a PS3 would care about it. But as soon as one console can do something the other can’t, the fanboy instinct takes control and the people that can’t do it want to do it even more. I would trade cross game chat for ps2 playback any day, I’d even throw in all the PS+ features, discounts, and freebies. Furthermore, I bet 360 owners would trade cross game chat for Blu-ray playback any day.

Yeah, how dare anyone want a console to do more. Must be “h8ers”.

I disagree too.. it’s not all haters, try playing borderlands, section 8 and many ps3 games online with friends and a lot of the in game voice chat is terrible. If we could have had a decent party chat like xbox at least we could enjoy our games more and be able to speak to our friends.

I for one am glad that cross game/party chat won’t be coming to ps3 because it’s virtually killed in game chat on most games on xbox360. I played on medal of honor with 360 the other day and everyone was in thier own private chat rooms. it kills the online game experience imo.
Awayze
I thought that too but it makes no difference than a person being in a Party or having no mic.

Anybody care to guess a feature that will be supported from the start on PS4?
xdarkmagician
I’m going to guess the PSN Store. :)

not ideal but not the end of the world. does make you want vita more though
