Things are awry in Hollywood, as per usual. The proposed Assassin’s Creed movie deal between Ubisoft and Sony Pictures has stirred up quite a storm in the film industry, it appears.
Vulture has reported that that the aforementioned deal has given Ubisoft an unheard of amount of control over any potential Assassin’s Creed project. To make the deal, Sony had to grant Ubisoft approval over almost every aspect of the film – budget, casting, scripting and even the release date.
An astonished industry insider who spoke to Vulture stated:
“As a director, even Steven Spielberg cannot get this kind of deal.”
A Hollywood talent agent who represents another gaming publisher also weighed in with his opinion:
“The whole Ubisoft/Sony deal is a waste of ink, paper and time. The level of control Sony gave up means, effectively, that Assassin’s Creed will never — and I mean never — get made.”
The head of another movie studio even went so far as to say:
“It’s [Ubisoft’s] billion-dollar brand, so I get that they’re protective. But they’re not moviemakers, and the only way to make sure it’s a bad movie is to undervalue what movie studios do — and this is a deal that totally undervalues what movie studios do.”
The deal has clearly got a lot of people involved in the film industry fired up – however – could such a level of editorial control for the movie finally result in a better game-to-movie translation?
