PlayStation 4 Specs Revealed at PlayStation Meeting in New York

The specs for the PlayStation 4 have been announced.

  • X86 CPU
  • Supercharged PC architecture
  • 8 Gig GDDR5 Memory
  • Powerful APU (CPU and CPU combined) running at 2 teraflops
  • Dedicated chip to encode video for sharing

The Dual Shock 4 has also been revealed with the rumoured touch pad, headphone jack, share button and light bar “to identify players”. A stereo camera bar has also been confirmed which will be used to track the controllers.

Basically, it’s bloody powerful.

“An informed system architecture was fundamental to the design of PlayStation 4” said  Mark Cerny. He also showed off a million physics objects in Havoc, all executed using the GPU.

It looks like Sony have learned from their mistakes and have created a console that will be much easier to develop for.

  1. I like the look of the triggers. Look more like triggers than buttons (I’m one of those that has to buy the plastic clip on things ! Had them free with a mag once tried em and couldn’t go back!)

  2. So torn… love the ideas on sharing, PS4 to Vita Remote Play, more powerful console but… I’m still torn on the change in Dualshock design and more modest upgrade in power compared to PS2/PS3…

  3. Just pre-ordered it at ShopTo.
Please Sony announce it for Euro release at same time as Japan & USA.

  4. What I’ve seen from the PS4 tonight all sounds great, I’m really looking forward to it now :)
The only downside is the emphasis on social network stuff, I hope there’ll be options to disable that completely.

  5. There’s a press release for the DS4 and PS Eye here: http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/130221b_e.pdf

  6. AV out? Really?

Surely if you can’t afford a basic HDTV then you should have better life priorities than a PS4…..?

    • Some would say the same about the PS3! I agree with you but I did use the AV output for my old fatty for playing ps1 and 2 games on an old telly (they looked better this way than shoddily upscaled) and as a seperate audio out to keep wires hidden.

    • AV is there for recording gameplay for editing later on because the HDMI will likely have HDCP for protection

  7. I’m seriously impressed by the whole 8 Gigs of GDDR5 memory.

  8. Remain to be convinced about the CPU, it would certainly be underpowered in a high end PC but consoles are a different beast. At least they are pairing it with a decent GPU that will take full advantage of that lovely fast ram.
Faster BD will certainly help too ;)
Now we want to know the price..

  9. Specs look very good (what Iunderstand of them). I’m now going to start looking a the new game videos.

  10. Will the 8gig of memory mean an end to all the lag on Bethesda games, or have i got the wrong end of the stick? Not into all the tech jargon so need everything in laymans terms :p
