Online Retailer Sets Down a Maximum Expected Price For PS4

Don’t bet your house on this, there’s sure to be plenty of speculation about the PlayStation 4’s launch price, right up until the moment when Sony announces it. It’s reasonably well known around the whispering corridors of the games industry that, with the PS3, Sony didn’t decide on a final price until the evening before they announced it. But, amid all the speculation, there’s one retailer sure enough to take a punt.

TheHut.com has sent out a marketing email (screenshot below) advertising their pre-order offer for the PS4. They’ve priced it at £399.99. Interestingly, though, that’s with no deposit and it carries their pre-order price promise. This means that they won’t charge you more than £399.99, even if it launches at a ridiculous price. So TheHut.com is relatively sure (they’re betting money on it, after all) that the PS4 won’t be more expensive than £400.

The listing is, of course, still a little vague on details so there’s wriggle-room in there if Sony has multiple bundles available – say a full featured one with that camera and a big hard disk and then a cheaper one with none of the extra pack-ins and a small hard disk.

They also list a release date but that’s obviously a placeholder – December 31st 2013. At least it shows that they’re hopeful we’ll see the console in the UK this year.

  1. I’m hoping it’s a bit cheaper than that, I think around £350 would be about right, depending on what it’s bundled with (number of controllers, HDMI etc).

  2. Sony would be making a mistake if they charge £400 for the PS4 as the PS3 suffered from it’s high price untill they knocked it down to £300. But i wonder if they’ve told some retailers that £400 is the maxium just so that they won’t try to charge £410+?

There is a rumour that Sony will be releasing a bacon making model for £400 though.

    • Isn’t ‘bacon making model’ a pig?

  3. I changed my Vita pre-order about 5 times the week leading up to release so I’ll wait a bit. I really want a midnight launch but there aren’t many options on the high street now, bound to be more expensive too.

I’m sure there will be two hard drive sizes but if you can upgrade them like the ps3 then the cheaper one may better if you’re gonna replace it straight away.

  4. If Wii U was £300, there’s no way the PS4 is going to be £300, £399.99 its going to be seeing as it doesn’t have BC.

  5. Love The Hut. Great service and great pricing too on everything I got there. :)

  6. I think it’s a bit early to be pre-ordering the PS4 right now. I personally will be waiting to see the deals/bundles that various retailers without a doubt will be doing. Also £400 is rather steep for a console. Yes it’s super awesome and shiny and stuff (well it might be, I don’t know about you guys but I know I still haven’t seen the damn thing) The 60GB PS3 was ~£425 at launch yet that was the top model. If they PS4 follows with a basic and pro option choice then the £400 price tag for the “pro” system wouldn’t be too bad providing its actually worth while (some basic things like a PS+ subscription and possibly a HDMI cable out the box unlike the PS3 ( < that confused the hell out of me as to why I had to buy one for it)).

I'm not going to lie. I'm probably going to buy it, but at £400 I won't. I'd much rather wait and let the price drop and hopefully avoid some iffy launch console like my 360 and PS3 slim have both failed me, multiple times.
