Rumour: Sony Discontinuing 3G PS Vita As Price Drops To Sub-$200

The 3G PlayStation Vita has always been something of an anomaly – you couldn’t play online games with it and the pricing was way off. The few 3G-exclusive titles have hardly set the world on fire, either.

So, it’s with little surprise to hear rumours that – in the US at least – the machine is going to be discontinued. Joystiq reports widespread price discounting of the 3G version (down to $199.97).

That gets you an 8GB memory card and a free game, assuming you sign up for the 3G coverage.

Sony has yet to make an official statement on this (and the price of the 3G version is still up at full price online) but there are several reports that suggest this is indeed a discontinuation.

The 3G Vita was recently dropped to the same price as the Wi-fi version in Japan (to ¥19,980, about £140), where sales have improved dramatically of late.

  1. i got the 3g version at launch and its come in quite handy, bein a door to door seller it helps keep me knowing where i am with the sat nav thing and chat shiz to people on facebook/twitter. i think its pretty good, only thing with me is i have to keep swapping my sim from me phone to the vita.

  2. I got the 3g version because I wanted the bells and whistles edition. Stupid idea, sure I got Wipeout for free but even when I was rarely using the 3g I was having to top up all the time.

So I just turned it off. In the house I use the wi-fi and out and about I use my phone.

Hopefully if they ditch it altogether then buyers like myself get a free game or reimbursed in some way.
