Ellen Page Isn’t Happy With The Last of Us’ Ellie

The fictional fourteen year old, Ellie, from Naughty Dog’s latest game The Last of Us looks a little bit like Ellen Page, since she’s a brown-haired teenage girl. She used to look even more like Page when The Last of Us was initially announced but the developers did the best they could to change her appearance after Beyond: Two Souls – starring Page – was announced.

And right now, Page is doing an Ask Me Anything over on Reddit, with one of the questions making her aware of the similarities between Ashley Johnson’s brilliantly acted Ellie and Page’s own face.

I guess I should be flattered that they ripped off my likeness, but I am actually acting in a video game called Beyond Two Souls, so it was not appreciated.

Seeming quite oblivious that they’re both Sony published games and quite arrogant in thinking Ellie was actually based on her, while simultaneously ignoring the actual questions about whether she enjoyed filming Beyond and if she would have taken the role of Ellie if offered, Page delivered the above misguided, misjudged and altogether confused response.

What do you think? Does she have any right to be annoyed, or should she just accept that maybe, just maybe, the 14 year old girl archetype looks a bit like her anyway?

  1. I think she’s just pissed that the role of Ellie was acted out so well that it may put her role to shame. I think her role and the whole Beyond game is going to be in the emo category.

    • Gah, I refreshed n reentered the page twice n thought my post was not sent. In addition anyway, now that we’ve seen the likes of L.A. Noire take on physical likeness of professional actors to the ectreme, I kind of want to see more of made up characters like Ellie. . I think the tech is cool n all but if you can make someone to be in the exact image of the producer’s mind then why limit yourself to real actors?

  3. What a stupid reaction. I’m glad they didn’t use Ellen Page. I’ve recently seen her on Conan and I’m not sure if she just had a cold but her voice was deeper than mine, which weirded me out a little bit. Hopefully that’s not how she’s going to sound in Beyond; Two Souls…
She should be glad it’s Naughty Dog who have a character that might look a little like her (even though they’ve changed it significantly since Beyond was announced) instead of some random shitty studio that just does it to grab attention.

  4. Just saw a tweet from Ellen Page, giving props to Ashley Johnson. Think someone tweeted her congratulating her on the role.

  5. ‘I can’t believe she ripped off my likeness’, a 15 yr old brunette with her hair tied back, and a slight side parting, said about Ellen Page.

  6. Not sure whether Page is only half serious, but yeah, the first version of Ellie looked very much like her, enough to make ND change her look.

If it wasn’t for Beyond, who’s to say they wouldn’t have changed anything…?

  7. I can totally get how the original design for Ellie looked similar to Ellen Page.

However, the final design they went for, plus voice, attitude separates her from the Ellen Page I’ve seen in films.

  8. I used to want Page to have my babies but after her comments,er, I still do.

  9. i thought it was modelled on her. Thought she had some kind of deal to do this and Beyond

  10. She’s been letting Cage stroke her ego too much; and she’s also probably realising that TLOU would have been the project she’d have preferred to do.
