Naughty Dog Comment On Potential “The Last Of Us” Sequel

It’s safe to say that I, personally, like pretty much everyone I know, adored The Last Of Us. In a rambling three and a half thousand word review I attempted to explain why without giving away any spoilers, which was a fair challenge. Suffice to say that the game redefined the third person adventure genre in my opinion, with superb visuals, great pacing and some clever set pieces, and telling a touching, moving story in the process.

But the story isn’t done, according to Naughty Dog. Fair warning: if you’ve not played (or, indeed, finished) the game, look away now. Click ‘back’.

Still here? Good. Well, you’ll no doubt be aware that – assuming you have seen the game through to the end – that the two main characters make it out alive. And chances are they’ll be back in another game at some point. Kotaku have a nice interview with Neil Druckmann, and he’s clarified earlier comments regarding the story of Joel and Ellie.

“I think the world is ripe for more stories,” said Druckmann previously to the PlayStation Blog, “but as far as the journey Joel and Ellie goes it ends with this game. We were very conscious that we didn’t want to leave this story dangling. If we never do a sequel we’re okay with it, because we told the story we needed to tell.”

As Kotaku point out, this suggests that Joel and Ellie won’t feature in any further games. “I can clarify that quote, because I’ve seen it misquoted,” said Druckmann. “I said this journey for Joel and Ellie is complete. In a spoiler sense, I was referring to the journey with the Fireflies and what they’re after with the cure and all that.”

“We’re not continuing that.”

“But as far as whether we come back to Joel and Ellie or not, or whether we come back to the world or not, that’s all up in the air. I can tell you there are people in the studio that would love to come back to these characters, but the only way we would do it would be if we had something new, something meaningful to say. Because the last thing we would want to do is repeat ourselves.”

Hopefully that’ll mean on PlayStation 4.

  1. They have to make a sequel!!! I knew as soon as I finished the game that I wanted a sequel, this game is a masterpiece and it would be very beneficial to them and for the people who love Joel and Ellie if they did make a sequel, hopefully on ps4 of course.

  2. I loved the game and there are different ways a sequel could work very well.

Perhaps indeed with different main characters and/or a decade later?
Were you come across Ellie midgame, perhaps “fatherless”, after finding journals and notes about the life of Joel+Ellie after the first game.
Just another survivor that happens to stumble upon the survivors of the first game.

  3. I clicked back :/

  4. I want gay Bill and his bitch of a boyfriend DLC :)

  5. Good to hear Joel and Ellie’s story has ended. Wouldn’t want to see the Fireflies taken any further too as they’re a bunch of deluded loonies.
A UK setting would be nice, following on from the images we saw depicting the UK after the world went bad.

  6. My idea for a sequel is it to be set 10 years from when TLOU ended, with a new set of characters, and we would meet a more grown and mature Ellie. Not sure about Joel

  7. If they ever did a sequel, I’d prefer it to be a prequel. 20 years earlier. Joel and Tommy’s survival story on how they fought against the fall of mankind, Joel’s emotion with the loss of his daughter and finding out (spoiler alert)
why Joel and Tommy parted ways.

  8. Just finished the game today and honestly, that was one of the best games I have ever played. I’ve never been to “attached” to a video game character in my life. To be honest i would absolutely love a squeal, the game was just so well put together with Ellie and Joel. I would like to see these characters come back and have a new “challenge” to face together, and i think “Naughty Dog” can bring that to people I mean you did so well on this game who says you can do it again. I know that they will choose what they think is best and I respect that. But, this game was really something else something exciting that people have never really experienced with video games. Bringing Ellie and Joel back is what I want, and I believe other people want that to so all we can do is really hope, and see were they will take this game weather they stop it here or carry it on is there decision.

    • i agree man, bring Joel and Ellie back make 2nd and 3rd game with them with a new adventure that is all i want , same here i have never been attached to game ever in my life

  9. Joel and Ellie SHOULD BE BROUGHT BACK why you may ask because people want to know what happens next , this ain’t The giver we want to know what happens next and if you bring them back , the fans will be happy, you already made a core strength of Joel and Ellie finish Joel and Ellie COMPLETE THE STORY!!! I SAID COMPLETE STORY!!!! and then you may go 10-30 years into the future and bring on a new set of characters , with a new story and AND!!! THE FUCKIN GAME ENDED WITH A CLIFFHANGER AND A LIE , YOU HAVE TO CONTINUE , THERE IS MY CASE , I HOPE YOU ALL UNDERSTAND LOL, I JUST REALLY LOVE JOEL AND ELLIE AND THIS GAME LOL, ENOUgh with the caps, i just really hope for a series with joel and ellie they are just my favorite gameplay characters

  10. a sequel would be great with different caracters. but in a way (not to be a complete ass) i kinda want ellie to figure out that joel lied to her, i even think she already knows in a way, hell im may be just completely stupid in thinking that to. there is just so much potential left behind with ellie that id think that the series would miss somthing if they just let her take a seat and do nothing or not get anymore main parts to show how she feels if she ever finds out about the lie, and if she does what the hell is she gonna do about it.
