PlayStation 4 Firmware 1.70 Details Revealed, Includes HDCP Off & Additional Share Options

Sony has just lifted the lid on Firmware 1.70 for the PlayStation 4, which is heavily focused on the way you can share your images and footage captured from the console. There isn’t a rollout date yet available on the update though there will be more information on what it means over the next few weeks. Here’s what to expect from update 1.70 when it does become available for the PS4.

  • Rich video editor with personalisation tools.
  • Export images and videos to USB drives via Share button.
  • Option to turn HDCP off allowing capturing of gameplay via HDMI.

There’s also mention of longer gameplay recording sessions, and additional features not yet announced. Sony reveal that it is currently working with Twitch and UStream to provide live streaming in 720p, while also allowing archiving of streams through Twitch. This will be part of a different update that seems like will come after the new firmware update is installed. While these are large steps some will still be waiting for features such as DLNA, MP3 and CD support, as well as things like themes, which may be confirmed soon.

What’s your opinion on the update? Are these features things you have been waiting for or do different things sit on your list?

  1. Nice to see that things are starting to happen. I wonder if we can expect to see 2-4 major updates like this within the next year.

  2. Themes…please…I’m fed up of the blue…

    • I’m to too fussed about themes but the ability to create and use folders would be nice.

  3. suspend/resume as advertised please

  4. well, i’ve got a 2 TB external drive, so the export option would be handy when i do get a PS4, and the HDCP removal for gameplay should mean more stuff on youtube, and other video sharing sites.

i’m still hoping they will have CD and MP3 support by the time i get a PS4.

the video editor could be useful, the PS3 video editor was a little limited in what it could do, hopefully a PS4 version would be better equipped.

  5. Nothing exciting so far. I understand Sony had to rush to market, but now it is time to get the PS4 to the level of functionality the PS3 offers already for a long time. If it goes beyond that in relevant ways, I start to praise them for it.

  6. The PS Blog post also says “There’s a lot more coming in this update as well, so stay tuned for more — there will be plenty in the update to excite everyone.”

Feels a bit like that’s an element that’s been missed from this story …

  7. Another example of Sony listening. The UpLoad Studio on XB1 is way better than the PS4’s sharing/editing for videos. Multi-clips with picture in picture and voice over etc, with custom skins/themes. Though to share via Twitter or Facebook you need to use OneDrive (SkyDrive).
If the PS4 comes up to par with UpLoad Studio i’ll be chuffed, add YouTube support and custom recording length so I don’t have to seek through 15mins each time and it will be most welcome.

The last gen was full of MS and Sony evolving these wonderful devices to a point where firmware releases could rival games for anticipation, here’s to another gen of evolution.

  8. Great information.

  9. Definately a step in the right direction, and regarding video quality most last gen capture devices recorded to HDD before being edited and uploaded to YouTube. The icing under the cherry would be YouTube support as people have mentioned with minimal editing required.
