No Man’s Sky Is Going To Be A Full Price Game

I’m a little puzzled at the moment as there a lot of indignant chatter regarding the price of No Man’s Sky, as yesterday the US PlayStation store accidentally posted it was going to be $59.99, before quickly deleting the post. I’m not sure why this is news when Amazon has been listing the game for £54 since before Christmas.

“60 dollars for a indie game, no thanks,” is one of the many comments floating around. Again I’m not sure why people are referring to this an an indie game, Hello Games are a small team but everything else about the title just screams AAA game. Sony are throwing huge amounts of money at promoting it and “indie games” don’t show up Colbert or headline E3 shows.

Oh and, Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen are indie games, both of them are space epics and both of them are $60. Just sayin’.

Compared to a simple side scrolling arcade game, Hello Game’s previous effort Joe Danger, No Man’s Sky is leagues ahead in both terms of content and development. It would also take you 585 billion years to visit every planet in the game, so thats 975 million years of playtime per dollar. And yet people still complain it’s too expensive.

To those people I have a simple message: Shush.

You can read more about No Man’s Sky tomorrow afternoon because I was lucky enough to get my paws on it last week.

  1. Ridiculous for some to suggest that whether you are an independent developer or not dictates how much you can charge.

The Witness was £30 was it not. The Witcher 3 and Project CARS were full price. I guess the problem is perception and expectation, Joe Danger was a pretty basic low budget game, but No Man’s Sky is not.

If you don’t think it’s good value, don’t buy it, like with any other game.

  2. Have you ever played Elite? Can you consider it had “gameplay”? You had ship, you traded, you got a bigger ship, you traded, you got cannons, you traded and shot things rinse and repeat…

If that is “boring” gameplay then why did I and a whole host of others practically spend our childhood playing it? When I eventually got to “Elite” status I called my dad in to show him as he introduced the game to me…

No Mans Sky will be a huge hit and I’ll gladly pay whatever they want for it.

  3. So will this be released on disc as well as download?

    • Not that its any indication of the answer, but game have had a box for this out on the shelves for a while now marked with ‘coming soon’.

That may however just be a code in a box, so is in no way indicative unfortunately.

      • That’s the first time i’ve heard of a code in a box,has there been many other games like that?

      • Unravel for definite off the top of my head, but yeah, there’s been a few.

  4. “but everything else about the title just screams AAA game.”

Does it though, how much depth is there to the gameplay? Are these generated worlds really all that different from each other.
