Overwatch Update Brings 4K To Xbox One X & Debuffs To Mercy

Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.

There’s an important update out now for Overwatch, bringing a small number of long overdue technical and gameplay improvements that will delight Xbox One X owners and pro players.

Here’s the news for Xbox One X owners:

  • [XB1] Added 4K support for Xbox One X

And on to the more fundamental gameplay tweaks, we see changes for Mercy and Junkrat rolled out from the test servers to all players. Mercy’s Valkyrie enhanced resurrections have been significantly reduced in effectiveness, making it no longer be an instant player revive, slowing Mercy down in her Valkyrie state and reducing its duration.

  • Valkyrie
    • No longer makes Resurrect instant
    • No longer grants a bonus Resurrect charge
    • The speed bonus Guardian Angel receives when activating Valkyrie has been decreased by 50%
    • Duration reduced from 20 seconds to 15 seconds

This is great news for the balance of the game, where Mercy’s character overhaul last year had left her overpowered in relation to other healers, and that’s something that we’ve seen with her prevalence in the Overwatch League. Blizzard had already switched Resurrection from being her ultimate ability to a standard ability, but Valkyrie’s effects meant that it was being held back and used to dramatically shift the balance of a fight.

While the changes are out now for regular players, they won’t be rolled over to the Overwatch League until Stage 2 starts on 21st February, meaning that that the last few weeks of Stage 1 will continue with the current Mercy meta.

Elsewhere, Junkrat’s Concussion Mines have been toned down so they deal less damage the further away you get from the blast.

  • Concussion Mine
    • Now will deal less damage to targets farther away from the explosion’s centre.
