Funcom to create three new games based on the Dune franchise

For older gamers the Dune 2 video game is beloved, a real time strategy sim where you harvested Spice, fought battles, and evaded sand worms. Eighteen years have passed since the last game, the terrible Frank Herbert’s Dune, and now Funcom have announced a six year deal with Legendary Studios to create at least three games.

The first will be an open world multiplayer game for PC and consoles but don’t expect it anytime soon, the game is is pre-production and development is schedule to being later this year.

“We are very excited to announce an exclusive gaming partnership with Legendary Entertainment to develop a line of video games based on the works of Frank Herbert’s Dune,” said Funcom CEO Rui Casais. “Dune is one of the world’s best-known science fiction universes and a personal favorite of mine. To work on Dune games is a dream come true for many of us in Funcom.”

The new Dune movie will film this year with a stellar cast including Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, and Timothée Chalamet.

The rather exciting thing is that Funcom have just announced a RTS based on Conan called Conan Unconquered, and it’s been made by former Command & Conquer developers. So, you know, they could make a Dune RTS. Like, Dune 2. Do that Funcom. Now.
