Facebook is making its own strides in the VR gaming space through the Oculus brand, netting exclusives here and there through Oculus Studios. Today the company took quite a big step to affirm its place in the VR gaming space by acquiring the Beat Saber developer Beat Games. The question then is why Facebook chose Beat Games of all the studios it could acquire. Luckily, there’s a handy FAQ that answers that question and more.
Beat Games is a strong team with proven potential across VR, games, and music. With the resources and know-how that we can offer, Beat Games will be able to accelerate, adding more music and more exciting features to Beat Saber as well as bringing the game to more people.
Of course, this acquisition brings into question how Beat Saber will be supported across the other platforms it is available on. As of the time of this post, Facebook has confirmed that content and updates will be pushed at the same time to all versions of Beat Saber, which includes the 360 Levels mode which is expected to be released in December. On modding, there will still be some openness though any mods that breach the rules by using unauthorised content, infringe on IP rights, or contain malicious code will not be allowed.
Facebook has also made the point that Beat Games will have autonomy when it comes to future development, but that’s a message that has been said in the past of a lot of studio acquisitions across the industry and isn’t always the case. We’ll see here though. Facebook has also stated that the acquisition of Beat Games is just a first step and it will look to expand its VR offerings in 2020, which may mean other studios get bought out by the social media giant.
