Best-selling PlayStation MLB: The Show franchise likely coming to Xbox and Nintendo

In a surprise move, it has been announced that one of Sony’s longest running PlayStation exclusive series could soon make its debut on other gaming platforms soon.

SIE San Diego Studio was formed back in 2001 and has collaborated on a number of smaller PlayStation hits as well as creating the ModNation Racers franchise. However, the developer is best known for its ongoing sports series, MLB The Show.

It has been confirmed that Sony, Major League Baseball, and the Major League Baseball Players Association have entered a multi-year agreement to extend their partnership.

What’s particularly interesting about the recent announcement is the second paragraph which reads:

“In addition, the historic expansion of the long-standing partnerships will bring MLB The Show, for the first time ever, to additional console platforms beyond PlayStation platforms as early as 2021.”

Needless to say, it has been theorised that MLB The Show could now be heading to the next Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and maybe other platforms including PC and various game streaming services.

At the very least, it seems as though Nintendo is on board. Soon after the announcement was made, the official Nintendo of America Twitter account posted the tweet above which now features in the official MLB reporting of this story.

MLB The Show has continued to remain a dominant force in the niche baseball game subgenre. Recent entries have been consistently well received by fans and critics, average review scores floating around the mid to high 80s throughout the past decade. MLB The Show 19 also set a new sales record within the genre this year too, underlining the series’ heavy hitter status.

Next year’s instalment already has a release date set for March 20th, here’s the official blurb:

With new ways to play, greater customization, and more exciting new paths to rake in rewards — this is the biggest and best Show ever. Write your own baseball legacy in an expansive RPG experience, or build and manage the team of your dreams to face intense online competition*. The Show 20 is your ticket to play America’s pastime your way.
