Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods – Part Two, the second story expansion to the hit 2020 first person shooter, will be out tomorrow, Bethesda has announced. The Ancient Gods – Part Two will be available across Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC and Google Stadia.
The Ancient Gods – Part Two concludes the epic story told in the modern Doom series revival, with the Doom Slayer having battled through Hell in the 2016 reboot, then journeyed to save Earth from demons, defied the gods, and then managed to get on the wrong side of the most ancient evil. This DLC expansion is the showdown of all showdowns, rallying the Sentinels and leading them back into the deepest pits of Hell.
Where can the Doom series go from here? It’s not entirely clear, but one thing that is known is that Doom Eternal is getting a free upgrade to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. You can currently play the game via backward compatibility, the various boost modes lifting dynamic resolutions and smoothing out any rare kinks in frame rate, but a native upgrade will always be welcome. Some might have expected this upgrade to come alongside this second DLC expansion, but that doesn’t seem to be the case, and there is currently no word on when we can expect to see it.
This will likely be the last time that a new id Software developed game will release on PlayStation, the company having been recently acquired as part of Microsoft’s ZeniMax buyout. Phil Spencer has given the clearest indication yet that (unless contractually obliged to) all future Bethesda games will be exclusive to Microsoft’s platforms, whether that’s Xbox console, Windows 10 PC or via Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming.

Doom Eternal was one of the real highlights of 2020, with Miguel saying in our review:
Doom Eternal doesn’t just set the bar, it breaks it. Many of the best games of the FPS genre do what has already been done, and can do it really, really well, but Doom Eternal does what no other game has done before, crafting a fast-paced power fantasy that sets your brain cells on fire. It’s an addictive exploration of the mythic Doomslayer character that delivers hours of blood-drenched fun, dozens of memorable collectibles, and a fan-pleasing story book-ended with gorgeous worlds and unforgettable music. Doom Eternal is a ripping, tearing masterpiece.
