Resident Evil 4 VR announced for Oculus Quest 2 – see more gameplay next week

Capping off their latest Resident Evil Showcase, Capcom announced Resident Evil 4 VR for Oculus Quest 2, an adaptation of the game from a third person survival horror game to a first person title. More details will be coming as part of an Oculus showcase on 21st April.

Resident Evil 4 VR is a collaboration between Armature Studio, Oculus Studios and Capcom, making some significant changes to adapt the game for VR. For example, you can dual wield, holding a gun in one hand and knife in another – and you can juggle them! – the series’ iconic typewriters can now actually be typed on and hand cranks be manually turned, and the inventory management is now rendered in a 3D view.

From the exclusive discussion of Oculus Quest 2, it seems that this game will be leaving the first generation Oculus Quest behind, tapping into the increased power of the chipset in the Quest 2. With the game’s development in collaboration with Oculus Studios, there’s also a question mark over if this could ever come to other VR platforms.

Resident Evil 4 is one of the most iconic survival horror games of all time, releasing in 2005 initially as a GameCube exclusive and marking a dramatic shift from the style of earlier Resident Evil titles. The gameplay was now much more action heavy, the enemies weren’t reanimated corpses, and on and on. It’s widely seen as one of the best games of all time for a reason.

What’s not clear is if Resident Evil 4 VR is the reported Resident Evil 4 remake that was leaked last year. Following on from the sublime Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes, there were reports that a Resi 4 Remake would enter into full production, allegedly underway at M-Two, an Osaka based studio that was founded by former PlatinumGames boss Tatsuya Minami. The studio partly worked on the Resident Evil 3 remake.

Of course, it’s always possible that there’s both this VR version and a separate home console remake in the works…
