Back in 2019, it was confirmed that Amazon was funding an MMO based on The Lord of the Rings though details were very scant on what the MMO would entail. Those details will not really matter now as Amazon has confirmed to Bloomberg that The Lord of the Rings MMO has been cancelled. This is following a contractual dispute with Tencent. Tencent has recently acquired Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd, who Amazon was in partnership to develop the game.
In a statement to Bloomberg an Amazon spokesperson said, “We love the Lord of the Rings IP, and are disappointed that we won’t be bringing this game to customers.”
Amazon appears to be struggling with breaking into the development side of the gaming industry. The majority of games that have been developed by Amazon Game Studios have been mobile titles, with The Grand Tour video game being the company’s only console release. Amazon Game Studios had released the hero shooter Crucible but it was shut down just a few months after release due to a lack of interest. Other cancelled titles include Nova, Intensity, and Breakaway. Currently, Amazon Game Studios has The New World MMO in development, and that was recently delayed until August 31st, 2021.
Lord of the Rings fans will not be completely without a new game based on the franchise, though will have to wait until 2022. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum in development at Daedalic. For more on Gollum, here’s a breakdown of what Daedalic are looking to achieve with their latest game:
Athletic and agile, sneaky and cunning. Driven by the desire to once again hold in his hands what he lost, Gollum is one of the most fascinating characters in the world of The Lord of the Rings™.
He has seen things that others can not imagine, he has survived things that others would not dare mention. Torn by his split personality, he can be vicious and villainous as Gollum, but social and cautious as Sméagol.
While being vital to the story by J.R.R. Tolkien, many parts of Gollum’s quest have not been told in detail yet. In The Lord of the Rings™: Gollum™ you get to experience this story. From his time as a slave below the Dark Tower to his stay with the Elves of Mirkwood.
Use stealth, agility and cunning to survive and overcome what lies ahead. Climb, leap and grapple your way past dangers or into advantageous spots.
While Gollum might not be a fighter, it is not unlike him to assassinate a careless enemy when the chance presents itself – or dispose of them in more creative and villainous ways.
The decisions you make and the way you play have a direct influence on Gollum’s personality: Always struggling between the two sides embodied by Gollum and Sméagol, it is up to you to decide whether the darker side of Gollum takes over or if there is a spark of reason left in what once was Sméagol. One mind, two egos – you decide!
