Ninja Theory gives update on Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II’s development

Ninja Theory has given us an update on the development of Senua Saga: Hellblade II, which goes some way to explaining why the game was not at the Xbox & Bethesda E3 Showcase last weekend.

While there’s nothing ready for a showcase of that scale, Ninja Theory has created a montage of all the elements they’re currently pulling together.

As ‘Chief Creative Ninja’ Tameem Antoniades explained, they’ve decided to make their own lives as difficult as possible when trying to bring Hellblade II to life. At the moment the team are currently building a vertical slice demo that will set the foundations for the rest of the game experience when they go into full production.

In other words, the game is still in a relatively early stage of development, despite having been announced way back at The Game Awards in December 2019. Since then Ninja Theory has been doing a lot of pre-production work. That has included sending their art and audio teams to Iceland – the game is set in 9th century Iceland – to capture sounds and photogrammetry for the world. This will then be combined with satellite data to recreate the country in-game.

That detail extends to the costumes, which are being made in real life and then scanned in, while Ninja Theory are collaborating with Unreal Engine makers Epic Games on enhancing all their character models and animations even further.

And they want the combat in the game to be as gritty and realistic as possible. To that end, Senua’s actress Melina Juergens has been in combat training for the last 2 years to be able to provide her own performance capture, and the animation team has also had combat training to get the right feel.

So, fans of the first game will seemingly have quite a wait before we see Hellblade II’s release. Hopefully it’s worth the wait!

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is in development for Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10 PC.
