EA has announced Madden NFL 22 with a trailer that’s all about the ‘Dynamic Gameday’ as they try to recapture the feel of the real world sport as closely as possible. Madden NFL 22 will release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia and PC on 20th August, with three days early access for pre-orders of the MVP Edition.
One of the most important things to know, when deciding to pick up Madden NFL 22 or not, is that the whole Dynamic Gameday feature set will be exclusive to Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This includes the following four factors:
- Gameday Atmosphere – More detailed and immersive stadium environments with crowds that can affect the momentum of the game at key moments.
- Gameday Momentum – A new performance-based momentum meter charts how the match is going. You can affect this with in-game perks called M-Factors that use the stadium’s atmosphere to feed clutch plays.
- Home Field Advantage – Each stadium has a Home Field Advantage modifier that, when triggered, can shift the game’s momentum. For example, the crowd noise in Kansas City delaying audibles pre-snap.
- Next Gen Stats Star-Driven AI – Amazon’s Next Gen Stats and real-world data are integrated in the new AI that’s aimed to emulate player and team tendencies as they evolve through a season.
I’m sure that some of these changes are going to be controversial, as they shift what should really be a level playing field. Yes, pundits always talk about the home field advantage, and it can be a factor in the mentality of players and teams, but this does sound rather “gameified”. We’ll see how it comes together in August.
Elsewhere, EA are overhauling the Franchise Mode in Madden NFL 22, with more detailed staff management and skill tree progression. You’ll be able to cook up weekly game strategies with the the new Season Engine, and the Franchise will change through the year with live service updates.
There’s also the new game mode: The Yard. This is a new single player campaign and avatar progression system that has cross-progression with the Face of the Franchise mode. Face of the Franchise also returns with a new story and the option to play as a defensive linebacker for the first time.
For multiplayer, there’s Superstar KO which will bring multiplayer squad play to real world NFL teams for the first time, while Madden Ultimate Team will allow for halftime adjustments to Superstar X-Factors and integrate Next Gen Stats to track stats for player items.
Oh and if it matters to you, Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes will share the front cover of the MVP Edition. Apparently Brady was super jazzed to have a photo taken of him with another person, calling it “a great experience”, while Mahomes called it “surreal”.
