Team17’s real-time shooter spin-off Worms Rumble is out now for Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One – the game also joining the Xbox Game Pass library. The new console release comes just as it is updated on all platforms with a new Spaceport Showdown map.
While we knew the game would be releasing today for Nintendo Switch – it was announced last week at E3 2021 – its arrival on Xbox is a bit of a surprise. Worms Rumble first released in November last year for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 as a timed console exclusive – in fact, it was a freebie for PlayStation Plus subscribers – and also released for PC at the same time.
The new Spaceport Showdown map is available across all platforms. It has a new, randomly generated, low-gravity mechanic that slows the action down during battle, spicing things up compared to the other five maps that are currently in the game.
Worms Rumble is a real-time action spin-off to the classic turn-based invertebrate blast-a-thon. It throws up to 32 players into modes like Last Worm Standing, Last Squad Standing and Deathmatch modes, all playing out on a 2D plane.
In our review of Worms Rumble, Gareth scored the manic multiplayer title a solid 7 out of 10. Here’s what he had to say:
Although purists may balk at Worms Rumble, I found Team17’s reinvention to be a welcome change in direction for the series. Real-time action wrapped around the battle royale genre works a treat here when combined with the zany, explosive world of Worms, but in order to become a multiple mainstay it needs more depth both in terms of strategy and player progression.
It’s a solid reinvention, in other words, and while not perfect, it’s great to see Team17 branching out from their traditional wheelhouse. For context, the last turn-based game was Worms WMD which launched in August 2016, which is aeons ago considering how many Worms games were released in the decade before!
