Ubisoft has announced Tom Clancy’s XDefiant, a franchise-wide crossover multiplayer shooter. XDefiant will be a free-to-play title coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One, PC, Luna and Stadia, with full cross-play expected to be ready for launch.

Prior to launch, Ubisoft will be kicking off the first test on 5th August, with registrations now open at

XDefiant will draw on 21 years of Tom Clancy games, typically with a more tactical edge to the action. This game, however, focusses on a more “fluid and visceral” game style that might feel a little bit more Call of Duty than Rainbow Six.

You’ll take part in 6v6 battles with players picking from Factions to play as and the characters – Defiants – that make them up. Each one has been inspired by a Tom Clancy game that Ubisoft has made, such as the Cleaners from The Division. There will be plenty of high-tech abilities, with the factions defining your role in the battle, but with your character being customisable and having no limitations on weapons you can choose.

Here’s a breakdown of the features:

  • Personalised Playstyle: Players can personalise their Defiant to match their playstyle. Players can choose a faction, traits, abilities, and ultras, then select from an arsenal of primary and secondary weapons, attachments, and a device to complete their loadout – and even tweak it on the fly (after respawning) to adapt to an ever-changing battlefield.
  • Competitive Clashes: XDefiant offers a variety of competitive 6-v-6 arena and linear game modes, such as Domination and Escort. Combine that with a large pool of uniquely designed maps in rotation and no two matches will feel the same.
  • Diverse Factions of Defiants: XDefiant will initially feature factions such as the Wolves (Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon), the Echelon (Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell) and the Outcasts and Cleaners (Tom Clancy’s The Division) battling across iconic locations. Additional Defiants will be added as the game evolves, drawing on a range of characters and abilities from the Tom Clancy universe … and beyond.
  • Game modes: XDefiant will have a variety of game modes to match players’ unique playstyles and allow them to channel their team-based, competitive nature. Players can choose competitive modes like Team Deathmatch or Domination, as well as linear modes such as Escort.

Tom Clancy’s XDefiant will be released under the Ubisoft Original label, coming from Ubisoft San Francisco with the team led by Executive Producer Mark Rubin and Creative Director Jason Schroeder.

Ubisoft will hope that this game can plug a bit of a hole over the next few months, the publisher having decided that two of its tentpole end-of-year releases needed to be delayed. Both intended to release in September 2021, Rider’s Republic has been shuffled back almost to months to the end of October, while Rainbow Six Extraction will now release in early 2021.
