Total War: Warhammer 3 Grand Cathay gameplay revealed in battle with Tzeentch

Creative Assembly has released a new gameplay video for Total War: Warhammer 3, showcasing two of the new factions that the game will introduce: Grand Cathay and Tzeentch. The battle is for control of the Great Bastion, a huge wall that protects the secretive empire from the invading Chaos forces from the north. Who will come out victorious?

In the trailer, Miao Ying and her army venture forth to defend the Snake Gate, one of three huge gateways into the Cathay heartland. It’s a key defensible position, but even if Chaos does breach it and get to one of Cathay’s key cities, they will find Cathay’s armies ready to defeat them on their doorsteps.

Miao Ying might not be the overarching ruler of Cathay, but wield the mystical powers of the Storm Dragon nonetheless. Her army, and those of Cathay in general, are geared more towards defensive fighting with flying ships, huge ornate cannons and rocket infantry. Grand Cathay can also animate towering Sentinel statues, and their leaders are able to actually turn into fantastic-looking dragons.

On the other side of the battle, Tzeentch and their leader Fateweaver can counter these defensive with harrying tactics from lighter infantry and flying units. They also use basic infantry fodder to try and deplete Cathay’s ranged weaponry and ammunition, marching forward with demons that can shield them with magical energy. Fateweaver has his own perks, able to save himself by using Oracle of Eternity to refill his own health, and use the Gaze of Fate to reduce the effectiveness of other units.

A lot of this is actually fairly new, not just for the game, but for the Warhammer universe. While Grand Cathay is the largest human empire found in the Warhammer world, they are relatively detached from the western side of the map and haven’t featured all that heavily in the tabletop game and lore building by Games Workshop… up until now. Specifically so that Creative Assembly can include Grand Cathay in the game, Games Workshop has dug in and crafted more background and story surrounding the Grand Cathay. Still, it might be tricky for them to involve Grand Cathay in the struggle that the united forces of good endure against Chaos on the other side of the world. Will they just have their own specific campaign and map?

Announced back in February, Total War: Warhammer III will feature a new grand campaign, tasking you with saving or exploiting a dying god, with each race having a different journey through the Chaos Realm that builds up to an endgame to decide the fate of the world. Previously revealed were the icy forces of Kislev and the Chaos armies of Khorne.

We went hands on with a preview of Total War: Warhammer 3 a little while ago, playing as Kislev as they stepped into the realm of Khorne in the new Survival battle mode. We said:

All in all, it’s a fun twist on the classic style of Total War battling. While it’s called ‘Survival’, in truth you’re alternately defending and attacking, going from a push forward to a capture point to setting up defences and choosing where to spend your precious Supplies.

Total War: Warhammer III will release in early 2022 for PC.
