Haunted Chocolatier will be more combat focused than Stardew Valley, the game’s creator has confirmed. Eric Barone (better known to the world as ConcernedApe) has set up a new blog to chronicle his work on the newly announced title, this first entry giving fans a rundown on how its combat will take shape.
Firstly, it’s been stated that Haunted Chocolatier won’t lift Stardew Valley’s battle system and drop it into a new setting. Barone says that almost everything in his new game will be coded from scratch, showing his work in progress below.
One major change between the two games is the use of shields. Not only will this allow players to soak up damage and deflect missiles, there’s also a chance for them to stun enemies. That right, the spiritual successor to Stardew Valley has a parry.
The shield/stun mechanic rewards more cautious, patient players who wait for a window of opportunity. But you don’t have to play like this, you could just as well charge in aggressively, and if you can pull it off, you’ll defeat enemies more quickly that way. There will be other off-hand items besides shields that will compliment different play styles.
There’s no real clues as to when Haunted Chocolatier might be ready for release, whether that’s in early access or a finished product, but Barone cautions that the game is still quite some way away from being ready for public consumption.
“I tend to work with a “vertical slice” approach,” Barone says, “and so it’s easy to put together some video that looks like a finished game. But there is a ton of content I still need to make. So, please understand that it will be a while before this game is done. I’m going to be working on it as much as I can, though.”
“The bottom line, is that I won’t rest, or release this game, until I am personally satisfied that it’s very fun and compelling, in every aspect. If it never gets there, I’ll just never release it.”
That’s fine, Eric. We’ll just go and play another video game about spooky town RPG in which players run a chocolate shop if that happens.
