MultiVersus open beta dated, new Iron Giant gameplay shown

multiversus alpha gameplay preview

Player First Games and Warner Bros. Interactive have announced that the MultiVersus open beta will start soon.

Those wanting to get some hands-on time with the crossover fighter can download the free beta test from July 26, 2022. This will be available on a variety of platforms, including PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC with online cross-play and rollback netcode enabled.

This latest MultiVersus update also came with a new look at Iron Giant. Scrub to around the 50-second mark of the gameplay trailer above to watch the friendly colossus pummel Wonder Woman and Taz. He’ll be joining 15 other playable characters plucked from a variety of Warner Bros. properties. The current roster features plenty of familiar mainstays from cartoons and comic books such as the Looney Tunes and DC universes. As more fighters enter the fray we’re hoping to see more surprising appearances such as Arya Stark from Game of Thrones. Alongside an already meaty list of heroes, here’s what can players expect from the MultiVersus open beta:

Open Beta and Early Access will also include eight different maps, such as the Batcave (DC), Tree Fort (Adventure Time), and Scooby’s Haunted Mansion (Scooby-Doo), along with a variety of ways to experience the game including the 2 vs. 2 team-based cooperative mode, 1 vs. 1 matches, 4-player free-for-all, co-op vs. A.I. matches, custom online lobbies, The Lab (practice mode), tutorials, and the addition of local play matches supporting up to four competitors.

Having played an earlier build of the game, we walked away fairly impressed. MultiVersus never shies away from being compared to a certain Nintendo series, yet manages to weave in enough intriguing ideas of its own to entice Super Smash Bros fans. For example, there’s a big emphasis on team composition and support abilities which will help shape the competitive scene. Perhaps the game’s biggest strength is that it will be free-to-play at launch, allowing anyone to download MultiVersus and jump in for a fight.
