Tempest Rising looks like an homage to classic the Command & Conquer RTS

Tempest Rising Header

Tempest Rising has been announced by THQ Nordic and Danish developer Slipgate Ironworks, an homage to the classic base-building real-time strategy greats of the 1990s and early 2000s, most obviously the Command & Conquer and Red Alert series. Tempest Rising is in development for PC.

You can absolutely see the game’s inspirations through the trailer, the gameplay and the narrative that it weaves. Set in an alternative history modern era war, there’s three different factions all vying for a rare alien mineral called Tempest.

From the rather slick looking cinematics in the trailer, the gameplay looks like pure Command & Conquer-style RTS gaming. You’ve got instant base-building with your constructions popping up like a pop-up tent, you’ve got harvester units heading out to gather up the Tempest, and you’ll be throwing some seriously sci-fi soldiers, tanks and other units into the action.

Of course, the main area wheree Tempest Rising can be leaps and bounds ahead of its inspirations is with the completely modern graphics, with plenty of fancy lighting and explosions, really fantastic looking environments and more.

Tempest Rising Gameplay

You’ll take on the role of Commander with the Global Defense Forces (GDF) or the Tempest Dynasty, each coming with a separate 15-mission campaign that will surely see them learn to control the Tempest vines and rise to power across the war-ravaged planet Earth. The dangling threat is that the origins of the Tempest will be revealed at some point as well… I’m crossing my fingers for some time-travelling shenanigans!

Here’s the feature breakdown from Steam:

  • Classic RTS base building with fast and fluid hard-hitting combat.
  • 3 asymmetrical playable factions, each featuring distinct economy and play styles.
  • Each faction offers a unique roster of units.
  • 2 epic single player campaigns with between-mission cutscenes.
  • Skirmish, custom games, and ranked multiplayer matchmaking with ELO rating.
