Wave Race 64 joins Nintendo Switch Online this week

Switch Online Expansion Pack N64 Header

Water sports fans rejoice, because Wave Race 64 is coming to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack this week on 19th August.

The buoyant jet-ski (and sometimes dolphin) racer is joining the slowly growing selection of Nintendo 64 games available via emulation for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers.

Wave Race 64 was effectively a launch title for the N64, pulling up to the starting line 1-3 months after the console’s debut, depending on the regional rollout. A full 3D sequel to a Game Boy original, Wave Race 64 was another early showcase for what the N64 could do, combining water physics with the racing unlike anything that had come before it.

The brand has retained a cult following in the decades since, though that hasn’t been rewarded with many more games in the series. In fact, there was just the one; Wave Race: Blue Storm for the GameCube. Will Nintendo ever revitalise the Wave Race series? Well, given how long F-Zero has spent out in the cold, I’d say it’s pretty unlikely at this time, but you never can be sure.

With incremental updates to the N64 game library, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack now includes:

  • Dr. Mario 64
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  • Mario Kart 64
  • Mario Tennis
  • Sin and Punishment
  • Star Fox 64
  • Super Mario 64
  • WinBack
  • Yoshi’s Story
  • Paper Mario
  • Banjo-Kazooie
  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask
  • F-Zero X
  • Mario Golf
  • Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
  • Pokémon Snap
  • Pokémon Puzzle League
  • Wave Race 64 (From 19th August)
