Phantom Fury, the follow up to Ion Fury, has been announced by 3D Realms and Slipgate Ironworks. It is expected to release in 2023 with the confirmed platforms being PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. The sequel will see the return of Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison as the main character, with the game itself set a few years after the events of Ion Fury.
“We’ve been quietly working on Phantom Fury in hopes of really surprising everyone at Realms Deep,” said Frederik Schreiber, CEO at Slipgate Ironworks and 3D Realms. “This was a game we wanted to make for almost a decade, and It feels awesome to finally show it to everyone. We know you’ll love going on this explosive road trip next year.”
Phantom Fury will have more interactivity than its predecessor, with this game being an action filled road trip across the USA. From the trailer you can see you will be able to drive cars and fly helicopters during missions, while also being able to interact with the environment more. This includes mini games like air hockey and arcade machines.
The plot of Phantom Fury sees Shelly being woken up from a coma with a new bionic arm with a mission to secure the Demon Core. The Demon Core is a weapon that can cause a lot of destruction in the wrong hands. Shelly will have over 20 weapons at her disposal to fight against enemies including a revolver, an armour piercing shotgun, drones, and electrified foam. The bionic arm can also be upgraded to generate shields and have powerful punches.
In our review for Ion Fury, I wrote, “Ion Fury effortlessly channels the spirit of old school shooters like Duke Nukem 3D, but the action is slowed by dull backtracking and environmental puzzles. When it flows there’s a good challenge to be had, but the level design can be too convoluted for its own good.”
