Metal: Hellsinger music mod update is out now – here’s a nice Jazz: Hellsinger trailer

Metal: Hellsinger Header

Metal: Hellsinger has been updated to support music mods, putting the power in the hands of players to transform the game into Disco: Hellsinger, K-Pop: Hellsinger, Rap: Hellsinger and even Rickrolling: Hellsinger, if you really want. Developer The Outsiders have already cooked up an example with jazz.

Niiiiice.

Modding support is important, because switching genres requires more than just dropping an MP3 into a folder to play in the background. The modding tools will enable modders to layer music and make it build and react to the player’s performance, just as the metal does in the game as standard.

The modding tools are freely available through the Steam Workshop, and with more information on the Metal: Hellsinger website, as Funcom and The Outsiders have provided both a step-by-step video and image guides to lead people through the process. Perhaps the best, most generous touch is that mods will even be supported with the free demo that’s available for the game on PC via Steam.

Alas, this won’t be coming to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S versions of the game. It’s incredibly rare that console games are able to support mods, and that’s especially true when developers and publishers have to be wary of the need for moderating content and the endless stream of copyright takedown requests that free music modding will almost certainly lead to.

We had great things to say of the original metal-filled release, with Steve writing in our Metal: Hellsinger review:

“Metal: Hellsinger is exactly what I hoped it would be – a balls to the wall, headbanging, visceral experience that nails the aesthetic and feel of the premise. The soundtrack is superb and perfectly suits the setting and narrative, and everything is carried along by an interesting and well-voiced narrative. Even if you are not a big fan of metal (and why the Hell wouldn’t you be?) this is an excellent rhythm shooter that absolutely slays.”

Now even non-metal heads can get their Hellsinger fix!
