DC Universe Online PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release coming this year

DC Universe Online will launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S later this year, developer Daybreak Game Company has announced. Following DCUO’s 12th anniversary the studio issued a development update for their long-running superhero MMO, detailing upcoming events and DLC.

Among these updates is a 2023 roadmap showing DC Universe Online PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. “Work will continue on our next gen console releases for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, due later this year,” the latest post reads. While there is no confirmation of a release date, the roadmap hints these editions of the MMORPG could arrive in Q4 2023.

Fans of the game – which features an ever-growing cast of DC icons – can expect at least 3 major DLC “Episodes” to launch this year. These will make their way to DCUO alongside new and recurring in-game events.

The next DLC – Episode 45: Shock to the System – will launch in the next few months, according to Daybreak. Here’s an overview of what to expect.

DC Universe Online Episode 45: Shock to the System

Dakota City’s just built different. The Big Bang attack that created new heroes, villains, and victims has drawn sinister, otherworldly attention. Ebon’s powers cast a long shadow, but it’s the Apokoliptian Parademons that has Static shocked enough to contact you. Why are people disappearing, why has Apokolips turned its attention to Dakota City, and will you be able to take on such a shadowy threat?

In SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM, players will travel to the heart of the Milestone universe in Dakota City to offer help and to investigate why these heroes and villains are disappearing.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM:

  • SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM will offer normal and elite versions of On Duty content, along with level-agnostic event versions available for a limited time.
  • The content will include open world missions and world bosses, with a duo, alert, and raid.
  • The episode will feature DC and Milestone characters including Static, Ebon, Rocket, DeSaad, and more.
  • The storyline will include adventures centered around the new Dakota City and written by acclaimed comic book writer Leon Chills.
  • The episode will launch new player rewards, including gear, styles, and more.

It’s been a long time since we last checked in with DCUO. After a glowing review at launch, the MMO has continued to evolve, weaving in new storylines, missions, and superpower archetypes. 12 years is a great run for an MMO, especially one that has survived a transition in publisher and live service boom.

It would later launch on PS4 and Xbox One, terminating service on PS3, then arriving on the Nintendo Switch in 2019. It’s hard to say what impact a DC Universe Online PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release would have. While relatively topical with its content updates – see last year’s Black Adam expansion – there’s no denying the MMO is showing its age. Hopefully a next-gen update will inject a new pool of players, potentially leading to larger content updates or even a sequel of some sorts.
