Frontier Foundry and developer Petroglyph Games have announced that their World War I strategy game The Great War: Western Front will release for PC on 30th March 2023. Pre-orders are now live, with three days early access for those that do – so, in effect, the release date is 27th March.

Ahead of the game’s launch, there will also be a demo released during Steam Next Fest next week. From 6th February players will be able to check out the game, playing through a section of the game’s tutorial and campaign before then tackling one of the historical battles, The Battle of Passchendaele – we previewed that particular battle last year.

The Great War: Western Front puts players in charge of either the Allies or the Central Power, giving them the dual-role of being the overarching theatre commander and managing the grand strategy of your faction’s military, as well as the field commander for when you launch an assault or have to defend your territory.

The campaign will force you to make tough decisions in trying to seize territory and gain victories that can bolster the national support you receive from back home, while sapping the enthusiasm for war on the other side. Those battles will see trench warfare depicted in great detail, with change to the battlefields that will persist from one battle to the next, whether that’s the sprawling trench network, scars from heavy bombardment and undermining, or the gradual obliteration of a town.

Alongside the campaign will be the Historical Battles, featuring footage from the Imperial War Museum, giving players the chance to relive or reshape ket moments from history.
