James McCaffrey, voice of Max Payne, has died at age 65

The iconic voice of Max Payne, James McCaffrey, has passed away at the age of 65 because of cancer. For videogames, he was most famous for playing Max Payne across all three games but he was prevalent in a lot of big games. They include Alone in the Dark, Alan Wake, Control, and most recently in Alan Wake 2.

News of James McCaffrey’s death first surfaced on Instagram when friend and actor Kevin Dillon posted the news. It caused confusion at first as there had been no official news from James’ family, nor had his agent or organisations he had worked with, including Remedy, made any announcements. Remedy wrote a tribute to James, saying, “We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our beloved friend and collaborator James McCaffrey, the iconic voice of Max Payne and Alex Casey. His remarkable talent not only gave life to our characters but also left an enduring impact on our community. Our hearts go out to his family in this time of loss.”

McCaffrey had very briefly reprised the role of Max Payne to celebrate the game’s 20th anniversary in 2021.

Outside of videogames, James McCaffrey had a long and celebrated career in movies and television. He made appearances in Jessica Jones, Suits, Revenge, Rescue Me, and Swift Justice.
