Death Stranding 2: On the Beach has been revealed during today’s State of Play stream, with Hideo Kojima returning to the world and setting of his 2019 hit in even more audacious and over-the-top style. Death Stranding 2 is coming out for PS5 in 2025.

Time to break out your best walking boots, because you’ll have a whole load more trudging across landscapes to connect people together in Dead Stranding 2: On the Beach. Naturally the game still has plenty of babies and black gloop leaking from people’s eyes, all of which will be utterly incomprehensible to anyone that hasn’t played the first game (or watched some explainer videos on YouTube), but then you might be drawn in by a ninja fights with electric guitar guns, ships coming out of baby mouths, and whatever is going on with Fragile’s neck hands.

First confirmed back in 2022, this sequel has now been fully titled as Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.

So what’s this “On the Beach” stuff about? Is there going to be some Xtreme Beach Volleyball style shenanigans between delivery missions with Norman Reedus, Elle Fanning, Shioli Kutsuna, and Léa Seydoux lounging around in beachwear? Probably not.

Kojima has often posted on social media about his love of the 1959 film On the Beach, which was all about nuclear anxieties felt during the heights of the Cold War and facing up to the realities of a nuclear armageddon. Of course, there was also a Beach in the first game.

Kojima previously revealed that he had written a story for Death Stranding 2 before the coronavirus pandemic, but tore it up and wrote the story again from scratch after 2020. Strangely enough, Death Stranding was a game that many found more poignant as they revisited it during and after lockdowns and the estrangement that was forced upon the world during that time.

Speaking of which, let’s dip into our Death Stranding PC review, which came in 2020. For this release, Miguel said: “It’s a story well worth revisiting or experiencing for the first time on PC. The pacing of the game can certainly drag to a screeching halt through the middle, but with boosted frame rate and crisper visuals, you’ll likely be too mesmerised by the hauntingly gorgeous world of Hideo Kojima’s latest masterpiece to even care about the uneven story beats.”

  1. The footage is compelling but i found the first game a bit of a trudge. The ventriloquist dummy though – that’s the sort of mad as a bag of cats brilliance i expect from Kojima-san. xD
