Braid, Anniversary Edition release nudged back to May, but it will come with 40 new levels

Braid, Anniversary Edition has been delayed by a couple weeks, from 29th April to 14th May, but the good news is that it’s now confirmed with even more levels and special features to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the classic indie platformer.

So, Braid, Anniversary Edition will now arrive on PlayStation, Switch, PC and mobile via Netflix on 14th May, with an Xbox release coming on 15th May.

There will be 40 new levels within this anniversary bundle, but they come in a variety of different forms:

  • 14 Commentary Index Levels used to navigate the game’s 15+ hours of commentary
  • There is also one additional level exclusive to Netflix users
  • 13 New Full Puzzle Levels featuring 16 new puzzle pieces used to complete a new frame
  • 12 Alternate Designs coupled with design commentary offering a glimpse of Braid had different development decisions been made

Looking back at the original pitch for this new release and remaster, this is going to be a real love letter back to the pioneering indie game. Thekla, Inc. founder Jonathan Blow said, “The goal is to make it the craziest, most-in-depth commentary ever put in a video game. You can follow particular threads of commentary spatially, through wormholes that go from level to level to see evolutions of particular concepts; the commentary has lots of markup so we can circle stuff on the screen, point arrows at whatever visual detail we are talking about, show diagrams, play back recordings of gameplay to show what happens if you try doing this or that in a particular level, and many other capabilities.”

It will also feature hand-repainted graphics by original artist David Hellman, extra frames for animations to smooth in-game motion – and the ability to switch between new and old on the fly. The sound has been improved and there’s new mixes and variants by Martin Stig Andersen (Control, Inside) and Hans Christian Kock.
