UPDATE: The issue has now been fixed and PS Plus Extra subscribers can enjoy the Fallout upgrades! Woohoo!
There is, however, still a lack of clarity for those who’ve got the game as a monthly PS Plus Essentials subscriber or through the the PS5’s PS Plus Collection – I obtained the game through one of these and cannot upgrade.
Original story below…
Bethesda has officially dropped its hotly anticipated Fallout 4 PS5 upgrade, coinciding with the recent launch of Amazon’s superb TV adaptation. Also available on Xbox Series X|S as well as PC, this beefy free update comes loaded with new features and improvements almost a decade after Fallout 4 was first released.
Topping this list is the ability to play Fallout 4 on newer home consoles at 60FPS and an increased resolution. However, some PlayStation fans have aired their disappointment after rushing to their consoles and discovering one particularly frustrating caveat. It appears that those trying to access the Fallout 4 PS5 upgrade via the complementary PS4 version available via PlayStation Plus can’t access the upgrade. Meanwhile, those who own a digital copy of Fallout 4 will see a link/button to download the game on PS5. Neither Sony or Bethesda have yet to comment on whether this issue will be fixed and when.
Aside from performance and stability updates, Bethesda will also be introducing new content. There’s a new “Echoes of the Past” quest that will explore The Enclave – the pre-war cabal that’s looking to gain a foothold in the Commonwealth – and there’s the following free new Creation Club items:
- Enclave Weapon Skins
- Enclave Armor Skins
- Tesla Cannon
- Hellfire Power Armor
- X-02 Power Armor
- Heavy Incinerator
Then there’s the Makeshift Weapon Pack, which includes… unconventional weapons like a baseball launcher, a nail gun and a piggy bank, and some unseasonal new Halloween items with 38 new decorations that include witches, cauldrons, ghouls and more! Halloween in April? Why not!
Originally expected in 2023, the free upgrade is almost perfectly timed to coincide with the release of the Fallout TV show on Amazon. The big budget production has drawn plenty of plaudits already for its blend of story and action, as well as how it perfectly captures the visual style and tone of the video game series.
Tuffcub raced through the eight episode season of TV to deliver a quick verdict, saying that “Fallout joins the rather small pool of video games that have been successfully adapted in to other media. While it’s not quite up there with The Last of Us, it’s certainly much better than Paramount’s Halo television series. Fans are going to love the attention to detail, but it’s fundamentally a great story even if you don’t know your Pip Boy from your Bobblehead.”
