Devolver reveals co-op fungi shooter Mycopunk – Steam demo out now

Pigeons at Play and their publisher pals at Devolver Digital have announced Mycopunk, a first person co-op shooter that’s heading toward Steam Early Access this year. But not just content to announce a new game, they’ve also released a demo, which is available on Steam right…. now!

With a planet-wide fungal catastrophe to deal with, megacorp SAXON has hired a bunch of minimum wage robot rejects for some cleanup duty, sending them off on a slew of dangerous missions to fight mycological terrors.

Here’s a breakdown of the game from the devs:

FUNGICIDAL TENDENCIES
Choose from an outrageous arsenal of advanced futuristic weaponry (and some power tools), then supercharge them in a one-of-a-kind grid-based upgrade system to create the ridiculous sci-fi super-weapon of your dreams.

BREAK THE MOLD
Slaughter hordes of enemies as they corrupt and weaponize the planet’s technology against you. Pick crawlies apart piece by piece — but be wary, whatever they drop could be grabbed up by another enemy.

VISIBLE RESULTS IN 1-2 MISSIONS
Alone, these rickety robots aren’t up to much, but together they become more than the sum of their parts. Combine upgraded abilities and customised weapons to create synergistic builds and achieve strategic co-op mayhem. Or just shoot each other.

ROACH MOTEL
Let off steam between missions in an orbital dropship packed with toys and games. Hang out with your friends, uncover more about the galaxy, and shoot the breeze with the insectoid SAXON veteran Roachard Cox.

But don’t just listen to them… because we’ve played the game and have just published our hands on preview. is this the next best thing since Helldivers 2 and Deep Rock Galactic? I said in our Mycopunk preview, “From its two mission demo, Mycopunk gives a good first impression. It’s light, it’s fast, it’s a little bit scrappy, and there’s that great art style. As it looks first to a Steam Early Access release, there’s definitely room to grow, and to reveal more of what’s planned. There’s multiple regions down on the planet, there’s more mission types to come, more modifiers, more of a narrative to wrap around things. If you’re looking for a new co-op blaster, this is one to keep an eye on.”
