4A Games has revealed Metro 2039, the next chapter in their acclaimed series, which will be coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC this winter.
Check out the announcement trailer, which does include some gameplay snippets, here:
Now taking place in 2039, we’re a few years on from the previous titles – the original was in 2033, of course, with Metro Exodus set in 2035. Returning to the tunnels of the Moscow Metro system, the factions have now been united under the Novoreich and a new Fuhrer – the legendary Spartan, Hunter. It’s an authoritarian regime, filled with propaganda, misinformation and indoctrination.
Stepping into this is The Stranger, a fully voiced lead protagonist who is returning to the Metro after swearing never to go back. In addition to the mutated horrors and human foes, he’s haunted by waking nightmares
The reveal trailer was heavy on the CGI cutscene, but does end with a brief gameplay tease as The Stranger steps down underground, showcasing the stunningly detailed environment and atmospheric lighting and effects. This is the latest evolution of the 4A Engine, which was on the cutting edge with ray traced lighting for the launch of Metro Exodus in 2019, and now has years of further development and tech advances to lean upon.
For more on the game, the full 15-minute stream featured Jon Bloch (Executive Producer), Andriy mLs Shevchenko (Creative Director) and Pavel Ulmer (Co-Creative Director & Lead Audio Designer) to give added context:
As a studio with Ukrainian origins, 4A Games has been developing Metro 2039 in the shadow of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine since 2022. The 4A team is currently split across two main locations, one in Kyiv and the other with the company headquarters in Malta. Noting the impact of the war, the press release was accompanied with the following message:
4A Games was born in Ukraine, and still remains majority Ukrainian, but now with a team that spans over 25 different nationalities united by a Ukrainian spirit of determination and pride for their projects. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has impacted and directly shaped the development of METRO 2039, with its story shifting to focus acutely on choices, actions, consequences, and the cost of securing a future. While told from a distinctly Ukrainian perspective, METRO 2039remains an authentically METRO story. Now working primarily from two locations in Kyiv and Malta, the goal remains the same: to create an experience that is unmistakably METRO.
METRO 2039 is developed in Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing full-scale invasion, and in Malta. 4A Games continues to support its homeland and team members in Ukraine in every possible way. If you wish to contribute, we can recommend the Official Fundraising Platform of Ukraine: United24: https://u24.gov.ua/
