The thoroughly dank ‘brinepunk’ roguelike shooter, Abyssus is coming to Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 25th June, launching with full crossplay alongside the original PC release, and big additions arriving at the same time with update 1.3.
Abyssus is a distinctive take on the co-op roguelite FPS genre, and with the console release, up to four players across PC, Xbox Series X|S and Steam will all be able to join forces and fight through an underwater civilization that’s fallen into ruin and corruption.
It stands out thanks in no small part to the brinepunk aesthetic that has you dressed up like old timey deep sea divers and battling through caverns and strange ruins. This is expanding with content update 1.3, adding a new Submarine area which is all rusty metal gantries, pipes and other submarine-y things, and you’ll be battling The Sunken, who appear to be explorers much like yourself that have been lost to the corruption. Then there’s a big new boss, Captain Gwaelod, the Elite Engine as a new Elite, and a new God, which is just Brine. They bring some new blessings into the mix to beef up your builds a little.
In general, DoubleMoose is also working on additional room objectives, gameplay improvements and matchmaking enhancements.
For those that want to show off a little, there will also be new premium cosmetic DLC in the Brinerot Pack.
I enjoyed Abyssus, but at launch last year, it didn’t quite scratch the itch for me. I said in our review, “Abyssus brings a distinctive brinepunk style to an otherwise straightforward co-op roguelite shooter. There’s fun to be had here, but the step up in difficulty when playing co-op is a bit too punishing.”
